Itinerary Breakdown

Start your Northern Thailand adventure this morning with a visit to Baan Muang Goong Pottery Village in Hangdong, where you can learn about the life in a traditional potters' village and witness the speciality skill used to create the unique pottery handicraft items. 

Then head on to the ancient city of Wiang Tha Kan. 

Formed during the Hariphunchai period, before the Lanna Kingdom of King Meng-rai was establish, archaeologists have discovered a wealth of artefacts during their excavations including sandstone Buddha images and Chinese porcelain from the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368). The best preserved structures within the Tha Kan School include the redbrick pagoda and the coronation or ordination hall. 

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant er-route to the impressive Wat Prathat Sri Jom Thong, one of the most significant sacred sites in Chiang Mai. The spectacular golden temple stands on the hill where local legend state the Buddha once visited on his travels.

End your first day with the breathtaking scenery at the "Grand Canyon of the North" or Op Luang National Park where you can see the winding line of the Salak Hun River as it meanders through Chong Khao Khat before travelling west to Mae Sariang for your overnight stay.

Leave Mae Sariang behind as you head north this morning to Mae Hong Son, stopping along the way in the small market town of Khun Yuam to visit the World War II Museum. This museum houses an impressive collection of World War II memorabilia and a Thailand-Japan Friendship Memorial which celebrates the good relationship the local town had with the Japanese soldiers stationed here during the conflict. 

Continue north through the scenic hillside to Mae Hong Son where you will visit the twin Burmese-style temples of Wat Chong Klang and Wat Chong Kham before enjoying lunch a local restaurant. 

Take a relaxing cruise along Pai River to see a local hill tribe village before watching the sun set at the white washed Burmese temple - Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, then head back to your hotel in Mae Hong Son.

As you journey northeast through the forested hills of the Pang Mapha District on your way to Pai, you will make a stop at Tham Pla (Fish Cave). Surrounded by brooks and cool hilly forest, the cave is filled with a variety of freshwater fish known as Pla Mung or Plan Khang. 

Next up is Tham Lot. This gigantic limestone cave system measures an impressive 1666 metres, with the Nam Long River flowing through its heart, creating an exotic subterranean wonderland of darkness and mystery. 

Enjoy a local lunch stop before visiting Yunnan Cultural Village to see the traditional way of life and Chinese clay houses. Then its on to the ancient temple of Wat Phrathat Nam Hu where the head of the Buddha statue can be opened and it is always full of water, which the locals believe to be holy water. 

Unwind at the Tha Pai Hot Springs before checking into your hotel. 

You will have time this evening to explore the local "walking street" of Pai Town where you can find some fantastic restaurants and bars, along with a variety of street food options.

Join the stunning scenic sunrise view at Wat Mae Yen this morning before returning to the Phu Pai Art Resort for breakfast.

As you make your way south down to Chiang Mai stop to visit a local Orchid farm and enjoy the riot of colour as you walk among row upon row of these delicate flowers. 

You will arrive back into Chiang Mai early in the afternoon where you can catch a connecting flight or spend a few days exploring the beautiful temples and sites of this historic city.
