Very enjoyable stay, but....

Swansea County, United Kingdom

Stayed here at the beginning of March for two weeks. After an initial problem, which I will explain later, the rest of the time was excellent. Staff, except one, were wonderful, always courteous and smiling and helped to give a peaceful vibe around the resort. Our room was very big and well maintained, water and toiletries replenished daily. The pool area was again spotless, and the adult section monitored for "child incursions" and swiftly dispatched to the other end of the massive pool. Breakfast was probably the best we have ever experienced in any hotel anywhere in the world. The beach was much better than we had originally thought due to some pics we had seen. When the tide is in, the rocks shown in photos do not impact on you using the water, and the beach is clean. Hotel provides sun loungers and towels and you can book activities through an independent vendor. We saw no hawkers at all while there which was great. One issue though which slightly spoiled the experience, and this affected the pool area too, is the noise from traffic on the road between the hotel and the beach. It is noisy, very noisy. We did get moderately used to the high pitched throttling of mopeds as they screamed along the road, but it is also used by heavy articulated lorries travelling a little further away to a jetty along the bay. The hotel is a 10 min walk to the local amenities including a well stocked 7 / 11 supermarket and numerous very good restaurants situated on the beach ( cross over the little bridge)The downside - we arrived early (06am), not through choice but because of the flight times. Receptionist (male) informs us that check-in was at 1400hrs. We asked if there was a room available on a temporary basis just so we could get some sleep. That can be arranged was the reply, at 50% discount. After travelling for over 24hrs, this was no what we wanted to hear. Then told that the breakfast room was open and we were welcome to use it, which we did. On leaving, a lovely young lady ran after us and embarrassingly told us that breakfast for this morning had to be paid for, the bill approx £46. We refused, we had only had a coffee each, as we were too tired to eat.Returned to reception and waited, and waited, and waited. All this time we were never offered a drink or anything else. At 0900am my wife spotted the hotel manager, Mr Courtois and complained about the situation. He apologised, talked to recepion and by 0930 we were tucked up in bed, and the breakfast bill was waived. Ok, job done. On returning to the UK, I was asked by the hotel to give a review, which I did. It was very similar to this post, highlighting the very good aspects of this hotel. The hotel replied thanking me for the review, but then spoiled it by adding "please understand we did everything possible to accommodate your early arrival". I do not accept this. The hotel was only half full, we were the only guests checking in, and within 30 mins of complaining to the manager we were accommodated, and not forgetting the offer of a 50% discount. I am unable to reply directly to thier response, so I want to make potential guests aware of the situation regarding early check-in. To conclude, the Phokeethra is a fabulous hotel, and the staff were a joy, but I cannot accept the inflexibility of the check in. If the hotel had been full, then fair enough, but it clearly was not.

Amazing

Brighton, United Kingdom

From check in to check out this place had it spot on. The hotel is spotless, our room was extremely comfortable. Staff attentive, friendly and were great with the kids. It was quiet when we were there, but breakfast was still well stocked, nothing ran out and there was everything on offer you could possibly want. The pancake machine was a big hit for all the kids! The food at this place is great for families, and doesn’t break the bank. The kids entertainment team were fantastic - a bouncy castle was set up one day with ice pops and cold drinks and snacks for the kids. The pools are great for the children - there could be more in the kids pool, but the main pool has shallow edges with bubbles in it that was lovely. The swim up bar is a must, and the pool is absolutely enormous. There is an adult only area which is a nice touch. Just along the beach are lots of little beachside restaurants which offer authentic Thai food which are cheaper than the hotel - the toilets here are basic though! The beach here is not good for kids as it is very rocky and too shallow, there is little shade and doesn’t stick together well for sand castles!! It takes 15mins or so to get to Ao Nang which isn’t too bad - the hotel offers timed trips to and from town. The beach at Ao Nang at low tide was a great afternoon with the kids. From service to amenities, for families with kids and travellers without this place is fantastic. We will go back for sure!
