Our 4th time here...first class resort

Melbourne, Australia

Our fourth time staying at the Melati resort. Friendly staff and outstanding facilities. Highly recommend the resort, restaurants and specially the massages. The breakfast options are well worth exploring each morning.

Mmmm Melati......Lovely......but All Inclusive option needs reviewing

Ipswich, United Kingdom

Myself and husband stayed here from the 13th February for 12 nights. We booked a pool villa suite. On arrival at Koh Samui airport we were greeted by one of the Melati staff and travelled the 15 minutes to the hotel in the Melati mini bus - the chilled bottle of water given to us was very welcome. On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a lovely member of staff (sorry I don't have her name) and she gave us a cold drink and flannel. She went through details of the hotel. As were were all inclusive she explained briefly what was and wasn't included. We were given a piece of pater which said " VIP All Inclusive" As our room wasn't quite ready she asked if we wanted to get a drink in the restaurant below (The Thai restaurant). This is where we were first given the All Inclusive drinks menu (we had selected the non wine all inclusive option) - and the basics are on this menu, Chang, Tiger & Singa beer, the local gin and vodka, tequila - these are the main alcoholic drinks. There were a few cocktails, the usual soft drinks and some fruit juices. We opted for a lovely cold beer. Once our room was ready we were taken by golf buggy by the lady we had met when we arrived. Our villa was room 502, absolutely stunning. Large bedroom with a TV in it, huge bathroom, a second large room which had a sofa and another TV in it, tea and coffee making facilities, mini bar (we were told what was and what was not included within the mini bar) Odd to have to pay for bottles of the local gin and vodka when its part of the all inclusive. This room also had a separate toilet and shower. The lady showed us around the entire vila, explained that there was a beach bag, flip flops and bath robes for our use. The pool outside was just perfect, and a lovely sitting area for when it gets a bit hot! The cherry on the cake was the pink bottle of fizzy on ice for us - at this point I wanted to cry! The pictures on the website don't do the villa justice. We ventured down to the bar by the pool and met the most wonderful bar staff/pool/beach attendants. We were handed a drinks/food menu and we explained that we were all inclusive, oh, so we were then handed the correct drinks menu - we soon discovered that we were the only couple in the whole resort that were all inclusive! I thought it would be easier to explain the pros and what could do with improvement to make this an absolute 5 star hotel:- Pros The staff make this hotel, their energy is amazing - we felt we made friends with them very quickly and they always seemed happy to see us. Matt the beverages manager is wonderful, he appreciates his staff so very much and always compliments the hard workers. He has a real energy about himself. Alexis the head chef, again a lovely man with a team of 35 staff to look after. We had a cooking lesson with Alexis and it was well worth it - if you book this up make sure you go feeling super hungry as you get to eat all the dishes you make! Just a few staff we would like to mention, Pui, Jan, Best, Baw, Kook-Kai and Bond - as I said all the staff are wonderful, but these guys were just great. A huge shame we did not see any of the senior management in the whole 12 days whilst we were there. Oh and the events manager, she is from the UK and whilst we were there, there were 3 weddings, so we saw her several times - she needs to learn to smile! I wouldn't book any event with her! The food is the best we have ever tasted - although we were all inclusive we were able to choose food from the main menu, so many choices in both of the restaurant. A few dishes had extra charges on them, but not many. All the food is freshly prepared to order. There is no smoking allowed in the restaurants, which is just wonderful. Smokers can smoke on an allocated bit outside. So no worries about people smoking near you when you are eating Breakfast - this was a buffet, apart from if you wanted eggs - a huge selection of breads, cereals, fresh juices (their mango smoothie is incredible) The bathroom is stocked with shampoo/conditioner/shower gel. There is a box in the bathroom which has razors, cotton pads etc The hairdryer provided is brilliant - i have long hair and quite often hairdryers on holiday are rubbish. The hotel provides plug in mosquito repellant (it could do with providing repellant for guest to spray on themselves) The tranquility pool is beautiful, it is adults only, and there is a phone you can use if you want to order anything from the bar The gym is fairly well equipped. We used it most days. There is a fridge full of cold water in the gym Housekeeping was generally good, plenty of fresh towels and water. The setting for the hotel is beautiful (we have been spoilt as we have had holidays in the Maldvies). This makes the weekly beach BBQ great fun. We were allowed to attend this as part of the AI and we did get the Melati T shirt at the end - I had read other reviews stating they didn't get one as AI OK, so now for areas where this hotel needs to improve in our opinion: The Wifi is shocking, the worse we have ever experienced - you are continually kicked out of it and have to log in all the time - this has been mentioned in other reviews and isn't acceptable for a 5 star hotel When we arrived we had a note to ask if we wanted a turn down service in the evening, we thought as it was on offer yes we would like this - we had it twice then it stopped, so my husband mentioned this to reception and we had it twice more - so 4 nights out of the 12! The 'English Tea' is awful - we did speak to Matt about this and he said that they have a contract with a supplier for tea and cannot be change, but he fully took on board our feedback. The hotel is extremely quiet in the evening. The hotel appeared full during the day. Sometimes we were the only couple at the bar in the evening. Twice a week there was 'entertainment' the beach BBQ and the Thai evening. We were not expecting lots of nightlife, but 12 nights of very little got a bit too much towards the end. We appreciate that most guests went out in the evening. Because the hotel sits within a great deal of vegetation, mosquitoes are a huge problem. I took deet mosquito repellant with me and still got bitten lots (I have travelled to Sri Lanka, Maldives, Turkey and Greece in the last few years and never get bitten). Whilst we were there the hotel did 'smoke' the resort with mosquito repellant - not sure it made a difference. The wine/processo is vastly expensive - we pad 36 pounds for a bottle of processo on valentines night - the hotel I did not see did anything special for valentines evening. Please use paper straws - far too many plastic straws being used. Maybe invest in a dishwasher for the bar staff. The bar stools by the pool bar a so uncomfortable - and cannot be moved as they are stuck to the floor The music in the view restaurant was awful - tinny and not the actual singers singing the songs. We did enjoy our stay at Melati, we knew before arriving that it was quite far from anywhere - we did go into Fishermans Village for the day, we used the service from the hotel which was 300 Baht and got a taxi back. To eat and drink in the hotel if you were not AI would be expensive - the cost of the UK, it isn't cheap. The hotel needs to look at the AI option, we felt second class, being handed a different drinks menu - food was available during the day around the pool, but this wasn't an option for us, if we wanted to eat at lunchtime we would have to go to the view restaurant. Very few people eat at the hotel in the evening, therefore it lacks atmosphere. We did laugh it off with the staff that we were AI as all the staff knew that room 502 was all inclusive. It isn't the staffs fault we had to have different options but the management. Either the hotel offers AI or it doesn't - not one rule for one and one for another. The hotel management need to be seen to be walking round the resort chatting to guests - we don't want to see their picture in reception thats no good, get out and meet your guest, get their feedback! Matt and Alexis are a credit to their teams. So would I recommend this hotel, mmmm maybe if improvements were made. Not on the AI option that is for sure. What stuck with me was the morning we left, it was easy, approx 6.45am and my husband had walked up to reception to get the golf buggy to pick up our suitcases (the phone in the room didn't work) and I saw a gentleman sweeping leaves outside our villa, I thought thats a bit odd for so early, and I noticed he had a 'senior staff' colour shirt on. He then asked if we were leaving, I said yes, so he came into the villa, I was outside the villa at the time so I walked in and to see him checking everything - then it dawned on my he was checking if we had taken anything!!! Really, is this how 5 staff guests should be treated? The hotel takes a deposit of your credit card when you arrive so have your credit card details just in case you accidentally take a bathrobe or beach bag - come on Meltai - this is not how guest should be treated!
