Outstanding accomodation on an outstanding place

Zurich, Switzerland

We stayed in Layana after having celebrated our son's wedding in Bangkok. The hotel is right from the drive-in entrance a "wow". Already the reception overlooking the infinity-pool and further-on the Andaman sea is impressive. From the first moment we're escorted by the thai kindness of the whole staff let it be in the restaurant, at the bar, around the pool or on the beach. The spacious rooms of the beach-houses in the front row are a lifetime experience. The pillow-menu is very special. The breakfast-buffet is rich and versatile, the daily happy-hours are recommended whereby you can watch the breathtaking sunsets behind Koh Phi-Phi. A perfect place to relax and enjoy yourself.

Total Relaxation

Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom

we recently stayed at Layana Resort for 11 nights. We arrived and were met by the hotel transport and were on our way within 15 minutes of getting off the plane. The first part was an hours drive in a lovely air conditioned hotel mini van with cold flannel and water for us. We were then driven through the countryside to a pier where we were picked up by the hotel speed boat for a 20 minute ride to the beach in front of the hotel where we were welcomed by the general manager and staff from reception - a lovely touch. A cocktail and more cooling flannels before we were checked in. First two nights were in the Garden view room which was spacious and in hindsight more than ample for our stay. However we had booked the Ocean View Suite and our expectations exceeded. From the previous entries on Trip Advisor the suite had an upstairs where you could sit out under the stars and lay on a day bed. However, much to our surprise the suite had undergone substantial refurbishment and now a two storey enclosed accommodation. Downstairs had a living area with large TV, kitchenette, toilet and the largest bathroom ever with a circular jacuzzi bath tub where you could open the wooden shutters if you wanted to be open to the elements (one issue was poor finishing on the locks and the bolts did not fit into the recess - need to sort that). Access to an outside verandah with a day bed, table and two chairs and an outside fan. Great place to retreat to sit and chill. Upstairs was the very large bedroom with great ocean views and another large bathroom although not air conditioned you got use to it. we spent most of our time at the pool where there is plenty of free sunbeams thankfully no one reserved any. You could turn up in the afternoon and still have free beds available. We were beside a very large jacuzzi which was just like a swimming pool and spent many hours in it with good powerful jets. A couple of steps from the jaccuzi pool was the infinity pool with great views of the beach. Pool side service excellent with cool flannels and fruit kebabs brought round at lunchtime - a nice touch. Glasses of cold iced water was always available and regularly topped up. The beach was fabulous however the sunbeams were always the first to go and you had to be early to get them. Sand was soft clean and inviting. Sea water was warmer than the pool!!! Bar could be better used - was a bit small with no fans. however a good place to end the pool day with a cocktail during happy 2 hour from 5 till 7. Snacks are provided to help you chill and watch the sun go down - fabulous place to sit and view. I was disappointed there was no entertainment - something like a guitarist or live music of some sort. With around 100 people staying there the bar was never that busy - the hotel could improve in attracting more guests if they laid on something entertaining even occasionally - that being said we enjoyed the time at the bar. Food was ok price wise - for example main courses ranged from 400bht to 1700 bht whereas in the town you could get a main course for 100 bht. some of the reviews recommended the bbq night on a saturday. Sorry but felt this was massively overpriced although the food was nice. Due to the prices we decided to try the local town "Saladan" It had a number of good restaurants - for a meal for two including drinks was around 600bht. Was nice and good to get out of the hotel to see the local area. A taxi from the hotel was only 100 bht and easy to get tut tut back to the hotel for another 100 bht We went on 3 trips. First day we decided to do the island tour. We were picked up at reception by the hotel luxury minibus to find that we were the only people of the tour. It was really good - we got to see the whole island and liked the old town where we had time to have lunch and look around by ourselves. Second tour was the boat trip to 4 Islands and snorkelling - brilliant day - forgot the power of the sun when you are speeding along and thinking it is cool to then find you have got sunburn - ouch!!! If you are on the boat - cover up. Snorkeling was excellent - lots to see and we stopped off on a beach and had a great lunch served by the staff - first class. Last trip was the sunset cruise on the same boat though the mangrove swamps with great monkey sightings. a few beers or champagne helped see the sunset go down. Lots of mosquitos - make sure you take a lot of spray with at least 50% DEET - thats the only thing that stops the little critters biting you. Overall this was a wonderful relaxing holiday in a classy hotel with fabulous service from all the staff. The guest were mainly German with a few Brits however everyone was really friendly. Would recommend this as a relaxing stay for anyone.
