Affordable luxury in verdant greenery

Singapore

Moracea is located in Khao Lak, about 70 mins transfer from Phuket airport. There are a plethora of resorts to choose from in Phuket (or even in Khao Lak), and given the prices I paid, I was initially a little apprehensive about what we would find when we arrived. As the van pulled up at the lobby, we were greeted with an airy large lobby, with giant trees soaring above. A friendly uncomplicated welcome, and although early, we were ushered into our Hibiscus rooms. The rooms are warm and friendly - not unduly posh, but with all the welcome of home and the highlight of the rooms - wide, comfy, window seats to enjoy the lush forest and greenery tumbling down the slopes. The rooms are exactly as in the photos, and very spacious. Although some may find the slatted doors fiddly, I felt it was entirely in character. The rainfall shower was strong, and the airconditioning (once adjusted) kept the rooms cool. The resort, in case you haven't gathered, is built cascading down the slopes of the Khao Lak hill. The Hibiscus suites are generally higher up the slopes and enjoy glimpses of seaview, while the villas are built at the foot of the slope, some following the pools; these give you closer sea views and the sound of surf, but potentially more noise from hotel users. The resort has multiple pools and bars scattered throughout, enough to give you a place of your own. The pools are generally narrow and more suited for pool lounging than energetic laps, but made up for this by the tropical greenery arching above. The beach is partly rocky and the sand is not icing-sugar fine, but perfectly adequate for beach enjoyment and the occasional dip, and beautifully offset by the sight of the green headlands arching out to the south. Additional facilities include a well equipped gym, a spa and a pool table. Breakfast was served in the open-air Malila resturant, and there was some menu change every day. The fare on offer was good, but didn't surpass the quality of the more expensive resorts. Nonetheless, there really is no reason to go hungry - with yoghurt, fruits, bread, breakfast fry-ups, local fried specialties (pad thai, fried rice) and noodles on offer. Standard coffee and coffee machines available. Staff were always friendly and helpful; although they didn't achieve the personal warmth that some smaller boutiques can achieve. I really loved Moracea - there were some small areas of potential improvement, but the setting and the affordable luxury makes this resort stand out for me.

Back for more

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

We stayed at the Moracea in2017 for 8 nights and came back this year for 11 nights. That in itself tells you that we like it. But to expand - the resort has the best of both worlds with some rooms being on the hillside with lovely rainforest and sea views, while others are at sea level. It is on the beach side of the road, so breakfast to beach is simply down a few steps. Although there are several pools, we tended to spend all our time by the one that is next to Cocos Beach Bar. This way we could swim in the pool or the sea without having to move far. The amenities at the Moracea are wonderful - large rooms with all the comforts of home and much more. The food is great - we tried several of the set menus and loved everything. If you are a fan or massages, the Bai Mai spa onsite is awesome. I had 2 one hour traditional Thai massages and a one hour facial. All were amazing and I only wish I had time for more. There is a gym which looked great - I don't use them at home so most certainly won't use one on holiday, but saw lots of others taking advantage of it. A couple of small but important improvements from last year - coffee machine at breakfast that made a pretty good espresso (much better than the drip filter coffee) and beach towels being made available via the bar next to the pool. Last year they were in our room (albeit in a great beach bag to take to the pool) but this meant that you had to ask staff to swap them over for clean or dry towels. The beach was clean and the water warm. There is abundant wildlife - plus a couple of playful kittens that greeted us daily. The village is an easy walk away, but an even easier taxi ride back. 100 baht gets you up the hill and back to the resort. There is a shop onsite with limited items, so worth checking this out before you visit the local supermarket. Lastly, the staff. One of the main reasons we love the Moracea is because of the staff. We chatted to the manager one day who told us all the staff are locals - meaning from the Khao Lak area. They are all so lovely, friendly and helpful, and eager to learn some more English. I have to mention the delightful Kate who we wish well in her Tourism studies (she has definitely chosen the right career for her personality), and both Phon and K who also greeted us warmly and have a great sense of humour.
