Perfect retreat with one exception

Great Dunmow, England, United Kingdom

This was my families first visit to Thailand and we were so excited to explore the country. We booked the hotel via a travel agent so we had only had a look at the website (which isn’t comprehensively full of information). What attracted us to this hotel in particular was the ability to have adjoining rooms. We did not want to share a cramped single room with our two children (10 and 13) for two weeks. We arrived at 11pm after a long journey, we where exhausted! We were greeted at reception (which is beautiful) with icy cold towels and a cool drink which made us feel so welcome. The initial room we slept in that night was lovely, overlooking a pool and the bed so comfy. Unfortunately, we were woken by the neighbouring construction early the next day. The hotel construction is due to finish in November, but being woken in this way wasn’t the exactly tranquil getaway I had been dreaming of. I asked if it were possible to be moved on our way to breakfast, and we were transferred without any problems to the other side of the resort, such excellent service. One of the assets of the hotel is the quality of friendly staff. You are made to feel so welcome by everyone. The taxi people are lovely, the room service team is lovely, the wait staff are lovely even the gardeners and engineers greet you with a good morning and smile. The accommodation is just perfect. Big comfy beds, generous bathrooms, beautiful decor. There are lovely touches like; detergent in your room to wash through your swimming costumes; a towel rack on the balcony; umbrellas and a torch in your room in case of rain/powercut; beach towels provided and refreshed each afternoon; daily maid service to come back to clean towels, toiletries and a made bed each day; air conditioning and TV in many languages. In the wider resort, there are beautiful gardens. The rainforest setting is magical leading to the beach. Sometimes, depending on the tide, the sea comes bright up to the garden wall! Set amongst the trees and around the pools are lovely wooden Sunbeds with mattresses for comfort. There are so many that it is possible to feel relaxed about getting a spot to take in the sea views or sit by one of the many pools. In the garden overlooking the sea, there is a veranda restaurant which you can get lunch or afternoon tea or set dinner in the evening, and a beach bar who will bring cocktails/ snacks to your sun bed. Breakfast in the main restaurant was a real treat every morning. Such a comprehensive buffet of hot and cold of foods, eggs cooked to order, pancake/ waffle bar, cold meats and salads, fresh pastries etc. Just delicious! My only gripe, which I will get to later, is amongst this major offering there was ever only one type of cheese. The taxi service in reception was fantastic. We asked for quotes in town and so I know that the prices they offer are not inflated. We went in air conditioned comfort to market twice. The highlight has to be the mini day trip we arranged for ourselves to White Sand beach, Koo Klong restaurant and Sairung waterfall. We were quoted 1200 Baht (some tour companies want 4000 to make your own trip). Our driver (I wish I knew his name, he is the tall young driver) was so so lovely. He gave us the lead to play our own music in the taxi! The main taxi man had told him to drive us in the bus rather than the car (there were just us 4) so we would get better views - how ridiculously thoughtful is that! The driver stayed with us throughout and advised us on what to see at each place. A genuinely lovely man. The setting is really special. The sea breeze and the beach are lovely. You can take a stroll along in either direction. We visited in low season, so there were not many people, but I imagine that it might be busier and some of the abandoned cafes open in the high season. Plus the hotel to the right (as you look from the beach) was being newly constructed and the hotel on the lady was being renovated during our stay. There pools are great, my two loved the slide pool. I liked the spa pool with all the jacuzzi jets. There is a pool in the gardens where you can do lengths and a pool by the main restaurant with a waterfall. All in all we had a really special time. My only problem, which I give as feedback to improve rather than a direct criticism, was the provision for vegetarians. We did not book all inclusive and I’m so pleased we didn’t, I think I’d have been miserable. One of the reasons we picked Thailand was to experience the food we love so much as a family in an authentic setting. There are so many amazing ways to prepare Thai curries and dishes in a vegetarian way, so for the hotel to get it do wrong just sticks out amongst the rest of the perfection. On our first full day at the hotel, still feeling a bit jet lagged night we decided to try the buffet dinner (same restaurant as breakfast). Apart from salad, bread and fruit there was not one vegetarian dish, not one. So much food, so beautifully prepared, so dissapointing! I asked about it (bearing in mind the cost is not cheap) and ws given a sad little laminated menu of choices. Undeterred, I ordered the Thai red curry with bean curd, one of my favourites. This came and it was effectively red curry paste with green beans and no tofu. I thought in my sleepy state that this was me experiencing the authentic Thai despite it being horrid. I went on to have several more red Thai curries in several other restaurants so I now know that this was not right. The experience made me feel secluded from my family. The next day we tried to order lunch in the veranda restaurant and the same menu came out. I tried the noodles which, when they came, were inedible. I had to send them back and got a decent tempura instead. The children were desperate to do the evening buffet for another night, so we tried on the Asian night again. There was sushi, noodles, curries, salads again not even one dish suitable for vegetarians. I orders from the sad little menu the green curry with aubergine. The curry was mostly coconut milk and the aubergine was not cooked properly. I felt so dissapointed. If you are a vegetarian do visit this hotel, it is amazing, but don’t go for a meal package beyond breakfast (with the one cheese despite 10 types of cold meat). There are loads of vegetarian friendly restaurants in the village (5 min walk) that are much more reasonably priced. I just wish that Khaolak Merlin would address this aspect of their provision, then the hotel would be a perfect haven.

Nice hotel, nice location, nice staff

Stayed for 10 nights with our three daughters (aged 14,11 & 11). We had adjoining rooms 2110 & 2111 which were very nice, each had a tub bath and shower, rooms are near to reception and walk out onto the balcony you are faced with a nice spa pool. Only gripe on the room was the tv, think there were only two English channels, BBC World News and Fox movies, but we didn’t watch much TV. Pools are all nice, the staff are excellent, the place is impeccably clean and there are constantly people cleaning, pools, landscapes etc, very impressed. Breakfast was OK, Bacon was lovely! Food from the pool bar (and drinks) are very nice, we often had Pizza and chips which was very nice. Only ate dinner in the restaurant once, very nice, reasonably priced compared to the restaurants we ate in locally. Not sure if any entertainment in the hotel as we weren’t there in the evenings, all in all, lovely hotel, great staff, great location (right on the beach) only improvements I’d suggest, improved WiFi (although poor WiFi means talking to each other and having more fun! And better selection of tv channels, especially during monsoon months!
