Peace, tranquility...and elephants

Bolton, United Kingdom

We stayed for three nights at the Anantara - but would have happily stayed longer, and do intend to go back. From pick up at the airport to dropping us off at our next hotel (in Chiang Mai), we could not fault the care and excellence this hotel and its staff provide. Picked up at the airport in Chiang Rai, we were treated to flavoured drinks and water, biscuits and crisps. The transit to the resport was in hours of darkness, but would have amply showcased the beauty of Northern Thailand in the day. Once at the resort, welcome drinks and bracelets were offered, and we were then escorted to our suite. The rooms were huge - bedroom section and living section being separated by a huge TV, walk-in wardrobe with safe, plus toilet/bathroom/shower section. a balcony ran full length of the room, and looked across the landscape toward Myanmar. From there, we saw elephants roaming with and without their mahouts at all tiimes of each day. Just below our room was also the new night pods which allow people to watch the elephants through the night. To say this was a calming place which allowed total relaxation was almost an understatement. We did visit the spa - run by a very knowledgable manager who could recommend appropriate treatments, and treated everyone through the door as an honoured guest. The masseurs who worked with us were excellent practitioners - so that we returned for a second spa with them. We stayed on an all-inclusive basis - which is the best way given the remoteness of the resort. However, what is included is very good indeed, and goes beyond just food. We enjoyed a visit to the countries of the Golden Triangle, the Elephant Learning Experience (including getting up close to a few elephants and helping to feed them) and the spa (first time) as part of our package. Food is served in one of two restaurants - we used just one of these. The selection and choice at any time was wide and food was excellent. As with everything else at the resort, the attention given by the people working in the restaurant could not have been finer. They wanted to make our experience the best possible. Nothing was too much trouble. Menus are wide-ranging, though focused on Northern Thai food in the evening - but everything we tried was of top quality. That we didn't try everything on the menu gives another reason to go back! Actually, from the moment we met our driver to transfer from the airport, every single person we met knew our names, welcomed us whenever they saw us, asked about our health and if all was okay, as well as what we had been doing. They showed a genuine interest - a refreshing change from some hotels where the interest is only because of a script. There are a number of walking routes, and other forms of exercise available (bikes, pool etc). The resort is increasing its range of activities available - we went for rides on newly purchased Royal Enfield motorbike/sidecars through the local countryside - exhilarating! Driving away to our next resort in Chiang Mai, we were so pleased to have stayed, and really gutted to be going. Anywhere is else has such a tough act to follow if you have been here first! We both agree we will just have to go back!
