Indifferent hotel in luxury location

Greater London, United Kingdom

I was expecting great things when I booked two river view rooms at the Shangri-La. Expectations were heightened by the superb pick up service from BKK airport. The operative meeting us at arrivals and the driver could not have been more helpful- the hotel charges 3500 baht for a Vito van. The transfer took about an hour in rush hour Bangkok traffic. Arriving at the hotel is also a wow experience- the neighbourhood is not great but the doormen, reception etc are well sorted. The hotel has a decentralised reception, which means that you don’t queue up at a desk upon arrival . Instead two receptionists took us up to our rooms (1326 and 1327) and checked us in using MS Surface Pros. I didn’t like it, but it that’s just me. The rooms had both seen better days. The decor was shabby chic or just plain old and worn. The bed cushions deserve a special mention as they were the highlight of our stay - superbly comfortable. There was a strong musty smell in 1327 - perhaps due to the shower flooding the bathroom - door not sealing properly. The toilet did not flush properly and a lightbulb on the bedside table flickered. Maintenance was excellent - has it all sorted in a jiffy - apart from the flooding shower. The view out of both rooms was nice. After briefly settling in we went to the bar. It is nice and has great views of the river - I liked the whole of the downstairs, don’t get why some people think it needs updating. It is not modernist, but does it need to be? The bar prices are typical for the type of establishment- steep. You pay for the view. The food is ok to good. Breakfast was good, an excellent selection of foods on offer, still the staff were struggling to clear the tables and bring out coffee and tea.The pool is suited for children and tanning. The area is nicely planted and tastefully done. We ate dinner at the Italian restaurant, it was good but not exceptional. Eating outside in the evening, we noticed many cockroaches as well as hunting frogs. I appreciate the environment- hot and near a river - but perhaps the hotel, undoubtedly aware of the issue, should suggest indoor dining in the evening. All in all I doubt we’ll be back. Having stayed at the Oriental and Peninsula, I rate the Shangri-La a firm third.

Perfect again

Bristol, United Kingdom

Having stayed in the Krungthep wing twice before, this time my wife and I were travelling with three friends. Our whole group absolutely loved the three nights we spent there; it is an ideal sanctuary in the middle of a hot and bustling Bangkok. All the staff working at the hotel have always been exceptionally friendly, helpful, polite and respectful. Everyone there clearly wants you to enjoy yourself and to put you at your ease. The rooms are always very special, and full of little touches of luxury that add up to make the experience uniquely comfortable. A lot of the toiletries are now L’Occitane, which is great. I love the bookmark on the bedside table when you arrive, and the view from the Krungthep room balconies is fantastic. Rooms are made up beautifully twice each day, with water and fruit etc. being restocked each time. Breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktail hour are all included when you stay in the Krungthep wing, and I think these make the small increase in price well worth it. At breakfast, as well as the food being of a very high standard, the service is also impeccable. Ammy and her team really look after you. We were greeted each morning by the friendly smiles of Ammy, Aom and Kla, which is such a special way to start the day. Again, both the food and the service at cocktail hour make it an experience not to be missed. Each evening we were looked after by Oui, who was kept on her toes by our erratic ordering and our card games taking up valuable table space. Thank you Oui and the rest of the team for being so patient with us! Thank you also to the chefs and all the kitchen staff - everything we ate at breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktail hour was amazing! My wife and I will certainly be back again; I don’t think we can stay anywhere else in Bangkok now that we’ve grown so attached to the Shangri-La!
