It's the negatives that.....

Manchester, United Kingdom

I always seem to remember, you may be the same which is sad because there are invariably positives as well. Our third visit in 7 years was awaited with eager anticipation and excitement. As the taxi pulled into the entrance of the Krungthep Wing the clear and obvious addition was the airport style security screening prior to entering the hotel. Well in this day and age it is only to be expected I suppose but it can dampen the spirits a bit. Gone it seems are the days when the porters would rush out to you and then hold the doors open whilst you enter the Grand Lobby. Upon entering the hotel I don't think it has altered one bit with the exception of much fewer flora displays. The calm and tranquil atmosphere remains as does the efficient check in process. Two river view balcony rooms were reserved but only one was ready as we had arrived at 12.30 pm somewhat ahead of schedule. No problems as we were invited to take tea/coffee in the lounge. The bedroom on the 7th floor provided the vista of the busy river with its non-stop boat movement of huge barges, water taxis and other craft. The decor, well hasn't changed for years and I would think a revamp is overdue. Having said that the room was comfortable, the bed absolutely super king size and the marble clad bathroom was adequate. One noticeable difference in the bathroom was the change in L'Occitane products in my opinion a downgrade from the previous offerings. I found both the turn down service and the servicing of the room somewhat inconsistent. During the four night stay the turndown was completed on one occasion by 4pm and no book mark had been left, yes a minor point but noticeable never the less. In the bathroom there was a large glass vase empty for 2 days and only on the 3rd did an Orchid appear in it. Our travelling companions in another room on the same floor only got an Orchid on the 3rd day. The Riverside lounge is a very pleasant calming area, ideal for the setting of afternoon tea and evening cocktails the latter being accompanied by a pianist. The serving of afternoon tea has change from the previous visit when it was served in the quintessential English style 3 tiered stand, it is now a case of a help yourself buffet. On the face of it, it lacks the theatre of the past but on reflection I would think there is less food waste and there is still enough choice to satisfy ones hunger. The evening cocktails and canapes are always a pleasant start to the evening. The variety and quality of the canapes both hot and cold is very good indeed. The cocktails on the other hand were a little disappointing and lacked any definite alcohol taste, the wines were acceptable and beer was also available. Now afternoon tea on the Tuesday afternoon ended with a complaint. I had all but finished my scone jam and cream when I bit on something hard only to spit out a piece of semi translucent plastic a good centimetre in length and 3-4 millimetres wide. There are only three possibilities from whence it came, the jam, the cream or baked inside the scone, the latter being my number one suspect as I would have expected seeing it or feeling it whilst I was spreading said jam or cream. Either way an unsatisfactory occurrence. The plastic was pointed out to Oui, the waitress serving us and she took the offending item away and apologised. At the time we were seated at the second table from the right in front of the large panoramic windows of the lounge and I just happened to glance down at the legs of the first and unoccupied table. It was there that I noticed what appeared to be a food spillage that had been missed by the cleaners and even in the alcove area of our table there were crumbs and a long black hair on the floor. Not the standard one expects of a quality establishment. Anyway the following day I made a point of checking the dirty areas again, well the long black hair was still there and the food spillage had only partly been removed. Breakfast in the Riverside lounge is a relaxing affair there is a good choice but nowhere near as much as Next2. Tuesday evening saw us dining in the evening at Next2 with the extensive buffet, enough choice to suit everyone. I believe the cost of the buffet is 1999 bht ++ per person, ++ being the addition of two compulsory taxes which add about 19% to the bill. The Chocolate boutique was visited on a couple of evenings and very enjoyable it is. Before I conclude with a more positive tone I thought I would let you know about the outcome from my afternoon tea complaint, there wasn't any. Now call me old fashioned or whatever you want but previously when I have had cause to raise an issue in any hotel I have been approached by a member of the management team in an attempt to rectify a situation. The least I would expect is to offer further apologies for an unfortunate incident and to provide assurances it wouldn't happen again. Alas on this occasion and throughout the 4 day visit managers seemed noticeable by their absence, which hasn't been the case on previous visits. The visibility/approachability was evident on my previous visit when I had a good conversation prior to leaving with the manager ( Mr Hirch I think). I had had a below standard meal at Salathip and passed feedback to him. He offered to refund the cost but I declined as we were departing imminently to the airport. I asked him if the hotel kept 'guest' records and I was led to believe they did. It was then agreed that the matter would be placed on my account/record for the matter to be resolved on my next visit. Now a number of years have passed and I wasn't expecting anything to be honest but out of curiosity prior to arriving I sent a message via the Shangri-la website alluding to this meal and the refund and guess what, nothing happened. Many reviewers comment on how the staff make a stay special. There are obviously those behind the scenes you never see but work tirelessly and there are those front of house you have direct contact with. Oui, Amy and the Concierge did their best to ensure our stay was as good as possible albeit the language barriers did at times cause amusement. Overall the 4 night stay was enjoyable but I feel the edge has just gone off. Would I recommend the Krungthep Wing even though its sparkle isn't quite as bright as it was, Yes I would. Would I return, possibly but I am heading straight down to the Shangri-la Singapore Valley Wing for a couple of nights.... review to follow. It's the negatives that I always seem to remember ............. !

Amazing

Bangkok, Thailand

During my 7night stay in August staying in the krungthep wing at the Shangri-la hotel Bangkok I celebrated my 70th birthday. The staff were wonderful with everyone helping me to enjoy my special day from breakfast time to bedtime. The cakes, the serenading and the greetings, so warm and friendly, as is always the way of the staff at this hotel. (Birthday or not). The hotel is up to the usual Shangri-la high standards with special mention going to the staff in the riverside lounge , namely morning team; Aom, Tubtim, Aoi and the wonderful Bank. Afternoon team Amy, Oui, Rose and Bass. Duty manager Jackapong P. In addition my room attendant (Kan), the chief concierge (Teung)(always helpful) the chefs (great omelettes, thank you ) and the Horizon cruise team. NOTHING is too much trouble at this hotel for its guests and I would recommend the Krungthep wing to anyone seeking relaxation and calm in a refined atmosphere. I will be staying here again without a doubt as this is my hotel of choice in Bangkok, with its ease of access to the skytrain, the river boats and sights.
