Possibly the best resort we've ever stayed at

Jersey, United Kingdom

As the title says, one of the best resorts, if not the best, that we've ever stayed at and a very appropriate candidate for my 100th tripadvisor review. I'm actually unable to find fault with any aspect except to highlight things that it's not! Firstly the service, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, was superb. Front of house, cleaning, restaurant, bar - couldn't have asked for more. We never had to ask for anything as we regularly being checked on that we were OK, but not in an intrusive way. Food and drinks were excellent, a mix of buffet and set meals for dinner and a choice of buffet or beach/poolside menu for lunch. Food quality was excellent. A good selection of local beers and South African wines together with a fine cocktail menu. The villas were perfect, quiet air-con, spacious, amazing bathroom, great plunge pool. We were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and they really made us feel special; they were actually able to deliver the sort of experience you hope for but are usually left disappointed. Not this time - amazing!! The watersports centre has a selection of Kayaks and also runs various other activities for guests. My wife described the spa as one of the best she's visited (& she's visited a good few)! Diving is efficiently organised via the dive centre at the sister Breezes resort. Depending on tides, the boat either leaves from the beach outside the hotel or it's a 5 minute ride to a deeper water location at the sister Zawadi resort. The diving itself was 7/10 and did involve a rough boat ride which didn't suit everyone. The beach at high tide is stunning - white, talcum powder like sand - and fantastic for swimming in the clear sea. At low tide it's a completely different story as the water recedes beyond the reef which is about a mile from the beach. With the tide out however, it's possible to walk on the sand between the coral and take a look at the fascinating marine life in the shallow lagoon. It's a very quiet place and is the ideal place to come if you're seeking some privacy or peace and quiet. It's not a place to come if you're looking for an active nightlife scene, although the nearby Breezes resort is probably more lively and is in easy strolling distance, with drinks included as per the Baraza. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Baraza to our closest friends if they were looking for the perfect peaceful retreat and we'd love to visit again.

Lovely resort for a special occasion

Winchester, UK

We absolutely loved the resort, we visited as a couple at the end of a safari for our 25th wedding anniversary in early September. Our stay was arranged by &Beyond as part of a package that they put together; ordinarily I like the fun of putting together my own itinerary, but thought for a special occasion I should let someone else come up with a plan. We deliberately avoided looking at the price tag for the hotel itself until we were home; it's high end, but wrapped into an expensive safari package it avoided any thought of value for money and I won't comment on that. The best thing, for us, was that occupancy was very low during our stay. Naturally, this isn't good for the hotel owners, but it was great for us. As you can see from our photo, the number of fellow guests relaxing on sunbeds overlooking the beach was close to zero much of the time. The one or two families with kids set up camp near the swimming pool which is understandable, so we paid one brief visit to the pool where it was a little noisier, but not a problem for us as we were happy at the far end of the beach on our allocated beach chairs, if we wanted a quiet swim we could have used the spa pool anyway. So I suggest that those wanting to avoid children, either book an adults only resort or book out of school holidays to minimise such issues. Absolutely no problem for us, as parents, we've created enough noise over the years with ours! Room: we had a beachfront villa which was enormous with day beds and all spotless, no creepy crawlies or mosquitoes observed at all. Outside, beautiful view of the sea from a sitting area, a plunge pool which we didn't try (water cold and couldn't work out how to switch on the jets/bubbles) plus as mentioned an allocated pair of sun beds under a shade on the sandy area elevated from the beach. Food: quality was excellent, it's a nice idea to have a buffet some nights and restaurant style service others. I see some reviewers don't think that a high end resort should be providing a buffet. To be honest, we much preferred the buffet nights as it provided more opportunity to chat to the restaurant chefs, servers and staff generally, have some fun with them and be led towards trying new things. For example we'd been told about a local fruit 'bungo' in a bizzare conversation with our taxi driver regarding Yellow Fever and urine colour....we were chatting to the chefs during the buffet and they found us some bungo and then some bungo juice for breakfast the next day. On the non-buffet days the several courses were nicely presented; I'm not a fan of the 'big reveal' for the main course, but I guess there are more 'stuffy' people who expect that sort of service. Well, actually, there were some stuffy guests who seemed to believe that it was below them to applaud the musicians doing their best to entertain us during dinner! Staff: lovely, I guess they're trained to keep a low profile unless guests initiate conversations. We found them delightful, happy to indulge our daft questions and requests. The pool waiters who had to walk the length of the resort to our sun beds to ask if we'd like more drinks were always happy to chat. Nobody was angling for tips and as there was no obvious policy we used common sense and tried to tip $1 a drink (more at mealtimes for the servers)....as the world becomes more cashless, I guess this becomes less common a practice anyway. Beach: beautiful sand, the tide goes out a long way to the reef, causing the security guards some concerns as guests walk out to the reef wearing their (included with room) reef shoes, lest they are caught by the tide returning. Some local fishermen intercepted those doing the walk, in our case, we were joined by one who demonstrated his octopus extraction and dispatch-with-a-spear skills. He seemed disappointed that we weren't thrilled and left us alone. There were few hawkers on the beach and although we were told that hotel security could only protect us between certain points, we walked along the beach for a mile or two - obviously without phones and jewellery - with only charming and cheerful interaction with locals. Common sense prevails I think. It was lovely to watch the whales just off shore travelling south (having been on safari of course we had binoculars) Suggestions for management: perhaps print some basic Swahili words on a small card that guests can carry around to break the ice with the staff? Maybe offer an enticement to get people to use the spa? Little to fault really! Maybe offer that one of the staff could take guests to a local village/for a walk/to see their home/local school as some may like to get out of the resort to get an authentic taste of local life? Overall, a wonderful experience. (N.B. I've left value as average as I honestly have no idea how it compares with similar properties and can't leave it blank!....)
