The Manta Resort

A precious Indian Ocean gem

Escape to the Manta Resort and relax at one of the Indian Ocean's best kept secrets.

Situated on an idyllic beach on beautiful Pemba Island, the Manta Resort offers privacy and romance, as well as adventure and water sports, on one of East Africa's finest island sanctuaries.

Within rustic thatched buildings, strung in a meandering line through lush green gardens, choose from elegantly decorated beach-front rooms and spacious villas which blend perfectly with their tropical surroundings.

Or, for the ultimate in unique luxury and seclusion, opt for the resort's spectacular three-storey suite which floats in the ocean, tethered 250 metres from the shore. From the submerged bedroom you can gaze out into crystal clear water at the abundant shoals of reef fish and coral heads; you'll also enjoy a fully-stocked bar fridge and sunbathing (or stargazing) on the upper deck – a truly memorable, one-in-a-lifetime retreat.

Head to Kipepeo Spa for a selection of massages and treatments which will transport you to your most blissed out state, with the tranquil sounds of palm fronds rustling and waves gently breaking as a backdrop. Embrace your new pace of life with a tangy Lemongrass Ginger Sling cocktail or frosty beer as the soft breeze cools your skin, before taking a romantic walk along the beach and enjoying a candlelit dinner.

Wonderful time at Manta Resort

Belmont, California

The Manta Resort in Pemba attracted me for several reasons; the diving and the unique Underwater Room. I was very happy and overwhelmed with both. The arrival was several air connections and an “interesting” drive from the airport through a paved and very unpaved road that made the destination a very happy sight indeed. I arrived in pouring rain through the afternoon and night and was greeted the next day with a glorious sunrise and wonderful weather (sun and some rain) over seven days. I appreciated Mohammed from the onsite dive company coming by each evening at dinner time to confirm plans for the next day. I chose 2 dives a day starting at 9am, but you can arrange the dives to fit your schedule preferences and of course to fit your travel schedule. My dives were a combination of drift dives and shallower, calmer second dives including Swiss Reef, Scorpion Secret, The Wall and Coral Gardens. I was amazed at the amount and diversity of fish and eels and rays and corals. Keep in mind when you visit this is a great place to see where conservation efforts and fishing for daily sustenance meet. It was great to experience this and talk to the divers and fisherpeople- both men and women join in. I enjoyed my diving and appreciated better talking to the local residents about their lives and community. The food at Manta was prepared, presented, and delivered excellently at each meal. Haji B. , made every meal a delight and took care of any questions and requests for me. When I came back from Underwater Room, Haji made sure I had a room to shower and change in, which was very much appreciated. Everything except the diving was included in the stay - drinks, food, daily massages (great!), and many activities. I went on a sunset cruise and thoroughly enjoyed my time on a local fishing boat. Check with your attendant and they will go over many options with you. The Underwater Room is exactly that. You are taken by boat to an anchored floating room that is half above and half five meters below the water line. Incredible experience to watch the changing fish as the light changes through the eight windows, and then turning on the underwater lights at sunset to continue through the night. Amazing. I found myself getting up every couple of hours to check out the new visitors at the windows. Your fridge is stocked with your requested drinks, there is coffee and tea on board, and your delicious and hot meals are delivered by boat when you request. It was a great experience. The bed was comfortable. The room below has a ceiling fan and air conditioner so you are very comfortable. The ladder to get down and up was very fun. There is a bag and pulley system for anything you wish to take down to the bedroom and back. There is also a phone and walkie talkie for your use if needed. I also borrowed fins and mask from the dive shop and snorkeled several times over the afternoon, evening, and next morning around the platform. The shower is cold water (75f) and no shampoo, just soap, to protect the fish. This is a must-do experience! I enjoyed my all too brief time in Pemba at Manta Resort.
