A precious Indian Ocean gem

Escape to the Manta Resort and relax at one of the Indian Ocean's best kept secrets.

Situated on an idyllic beach on beautiful Pemba Island, the Manta Resort offers privacy and romance, as well as adventure and water sports, on one of East Africa's finest island sanctuaries.

Within rustic thatched buildings, strung in a meandering line through lush green gardens, choose from elegantly decorated beach-front rooms and spacious villas which blend perfectly with their tropical surroundings.

Or, for the ultimate in unique luxury and seclusion, opt for the resort's spectacular three-storey suite which floats in the ocean, tethered 250 metres from the shore. From the submerged bedroom you can gaze out into crystal clear water at the abundant shoals of reef fish and coral heads; you'll also enjoy a fully-stocked bar fridge and sunbathing (or stargazing) on the upper deck – a truly memorable, one-in-a-lifetime retreat.

Head to Kipepeo Spa for a selection of massages and treatments which will transport you to your most blissed out state, with the tranquil sounds of palm fronds rustling and waves gently breaking as a backdrop. Embrace your new pace of life with a tangy Lemongrass Ginger Sling cocktail or frosty beer as the soft breeze cools your skin, before taking a romantic walk along the beach and enjoying a candlelit dinner.

Tranquility defined

Dorset

The Manta Resort is truly somewhere special. The setting is perfection. Nestling amongst palm trees, looking out over the Indian Ocean with a beautiful stretch of beach - a couples paradise. The seafront villas provide excellent accommodation, with views to die for. The sight and sound of the ocean is a tonic to be savoured. With complimentary spa treatments, daily laundry service and all inclusive food and drinks, all you have to do is relax. The service is first class with your waiter becoming a friend for your stay. Meals on the veranda are a joy and the choice and quality of food and drink is good. THE UNDERWATER ROOM. A unique opportunity to sleep below the ocean. A sundeck, a lounge area and then downstairs (under water) to the bedroom. With glass on all four sides it is simply surreal. To lay in bed and watch shoals of fish outside your window is a pleasure to behold. Bat Fish, Giant Trevally, Goat Fish and a resident Barracude - it doesn't get any better. Being 100 yards offshore, with dinner delivered by boat, this is tranquility defined. The nearby reef provides excellent coral and fish viewing opportunities which the Dive Team encourage guests to visit on the daily snorkelling or dive trips. The equipment is first class, as are the guides. The sunset cruise, fishing trips and walk along the shoreline at low tide to the lighthouse are all to be recommended, or you can just chill in a hammock whilst being served drinks from the beach bar. The resort is small, personal, relaxed and informal. The staff are attentive but not intrusive. Having had a fabulous week in paradise, we will be returning soon. ps The journey from the airport is one of discovery. Past local villages and settlements, along the track, through the rain forest, to be welcomed by smiling staff as you emerge at the resort. Let our vacation commence.

Not the paradise that they claim

Edmonton, Canada

The underwater room is a pretty cool and unique experience. However I would not recommend staying there for more than a night or two. The room itself is actually floating on the water and anchored to the ocean floor. So it is much like sleeping on a boat and when the water is choppy, it will not be good for anyone who’s prone to motion sickness. Quarters are cramped, there is no hot water and if you were inclined to take a cold shower, shampoo and conditioner is not allowed. In order to stay in the underwater room you have to stay in their regular rooms as well. A couple of nights in their seafront villa was more than enough for me and I checked out early. Many critters and mosquitoes in the room and ironically enough the mosquito netting trapped them inside around the bed. There is not a proper air conditioner in the room, just a fan and some sort of “breeze machine” above the bed. There is no WiFi in the room which is unacceptable in this day and age. There is not even a telephone in the room to contact the hotel staff and cell signals are virtually nonexistent. Food was mostly unappetizing but thankfully drinks were readily available. The transfer to the hotel was an uncomfortable 90 minute ride in 30 degree temperatures with no A/C or water provided.
