Beautiful location, hotel doesn't quite match up to the grandeur of the setting

New York City, New York

We had a great stay at Sugar Beach but the hotel does not excel at the little things. It goes without saying that the setting is picture perfect - great beach, watersports, convenient snorkeling, etc. The rooms are lovely though if you get stuck in the hinterlands like we did, it will impact your stay. The food is decent to good with prices that don't quite match the quality but that is to be expected in the Caribbean. Just do NOT order the $34 CUP of fried rice at the Cane Bar. That was one of the most laughably overpriced things we've ordered anywhere in a long time. It was about $3 worth of food. The $29 bland, mostly devoid of cheese quesadilla at the smaller beach was a close second. Otherwise, the food was fine and breakfast was excellent. Where the hotel seems to struggle is around attention to detail. This is one of the first resorts we've visited in ages where we did not receive an email, call or questionnaire from the Concierge in advance of our stay confirming airport transfers, asking us about particular requests, excursions, spa reservations, etc. This is also the first high end Caribbean resort we've visited in years where the hotel does not provide a dedicated room or area for guests to change upon arriving at the hotel if the room is not ready. It's totally fine for the room to not be ready but most guests are arriving from hours-long journeys. We were wearing our cold weather clothing and were literally told to go eat at the Bayside restaurant and they would come find us when the room was available. What if we didn't want to eat? What if we just wanted to hang out by the beach? What if we didn't want to wear sweaters and jeans and jackets? We were left in the hotel lobby to literally rifle through open suitcases and underwear and whatever to find clothes to change into. Apparently this is standard operating procedure because when I expressed displeasure with the total lack of privacy while I looked for a bathing suit at the bottom of my daughter's bag, the staff looked at me like I had 3 heads. I've never visited a similar category resort where water was not made available on the beach .We're used to sitting down to bucket of ice and bottled water. This is particularly glaring at Sugar Beach if your room is in the 800s and going back to your villa for a beverage is a 30 minute excursion. It seems a lot of people brought water down with them. We figured that out on Day 3. The location of your room or villa will make or break your vacation. We had a room at the highest point of the resort. No, it doesn't afford you a better view. It results in an ice cold, unusable plunge pool filled with leaves and the need to sit in an enclosed van 10x day to get anywhere. The van thing was very disruptive at first and really broke the mood of feeling like you were at a beach resort. I also think the resort should think more carefully about whether families traveling with children should be that far up. However, the drivers were the best staff on property and they made the "inconvenience" as pleasant as possible. Lots of other examples of the lack of polish like printing a multi-page hotel bill with charges that knowingly don't line up. When questioning the clear misalignment the staff tells you, in a very surly manner, that that's just the way the system works. Huh? If the system doesn't work properly why don't you work on fixing it? We really did have a great time - weather was fantastic, we kayaked, snorkeled, swam, visited the mud baths, waterfalls, etc. and had a lovely stay. We do feel that we drew the short end of the stick as far as villa location and do think the hotel should work on rounding out the rough edges. It's a lovely spot and you will surely enjoy your stay - there's just a little something missing.
