Great Honeymoon, but Not the Best

Chicago, Illinois, United States

I spent a lot of hours, days and months researching for our Honeymoon trip as we wanted this to be an extra special vacation. We do a lot of All Inclusive’s (AI) and after researching Sandals vs other St. Lucian resorts, we wanted to know what would be the difference between this Sandals resort compared to other top-notch AI’s. I will simply tell you the facts rather than just opinion in this review. Rooms: Do not let all the categories confuse you. The room categories were beyond confusing and I did not see the point in paying more for amenities that come standard in a regular AI. There is only a difference in location and whether or not you get a balcony, walkout patio, or swim up pool. Those are the main differences. Each room is the exact same and has the same thing to offer unless you do Club level and above which just gets you liquor in addition to beer and wine in the mini fridge, and access to make reservations in different place. In our opinion, the Butler service is not necessary for the amount you pay. The overwater bungalows and randovals are very expensive, and not really all that private. We had an issue with our room which was “Oceanview”, but it really just faced the road which is extremely noisy. Beware when booking “Oceanview” as it is just looking at a noisy road. We were switched to a “Caribbean” facing room and was much quieter as it was away from the road. The rooms do not block sound at all so if you are a light sleeper, these rooms will definitely penetrate sound such as, the people next to you and hallway activity and noise etc. I am an extremely light sleeper so being on our Honeymoon and being kept up with noise was really disheartening. We live in the city of Chicago and we wanted to escape the noise, grass cutting, horns honking and sirens. We heard it all the first two nights of our Honeymoon so we were not really pleased. Restaurants: The best restaurants overall were Kimonos and Soy. Kimono’s is the only restaurant you need a reservation for and it is easy to get. We did not eat at Bombay, but other guests said it was good. Gordon’s on the Pier has a nice ambiance. Dinos is a great AI resort vacation pizza. You can order them, head back to the pool, pick it up and eat in the pool if you desire. Mariners and Barefoot by the Sea are on the beach and offer pretty much the same things. The Pub, opens at 5 and it turns into the “Club”, or party area at 11/midnight. Toscanini’s is Italian and requires pants for men. It is open for breakfast and dinner, but it really disappoints. For some reason, the wait staff takes a long time to serve you here and the food is just mediocre. Other guests thought Josephine’s was great, however we did not eat there. The Bayside is pretty standard and the breakfast buffet is really lacking compared to other AI’s we have stayed at. It is really the same items every day and they serve a mixture of canned fruit and fresh fruit. We have never been served canned fruit at any AI.. EVER… So that was disappointing. Activities: The activities/entertainment team was pretty non-existent until our last two nights and days. There are some fun shows to watch in the lobby. The “Newlywed, not so Newlywed” game was really entertaining. The “Dancing with Grande Stars” was fun as well. There was not much entertainment in terms of daily activities. There are a FEW things happening each day, but nothing like what we are used to at an AI. Friday was the absolute most fun with the Pool Party. The foam party was great, and the staff all participated and jumped in the pool. You can do excursions which we recommend. The resort promotes the companies they work with. We did the Volcanic Mud, Waterfall, Snorkeling boat tour with Real Deal. They sell it on the beach and they are certified and very safe. It was a little less expensive than the resort’s, which I think is something like AJ’s tour or something, but it is the exact same tour. We would rather give to the local businesses so we booked with Real Deal. Great time and good fun. The Rum punch on the way back is awesome, but always gets everyone on those tours drunk… real fast… Service: We did have some issues with our initial room and I spoke to the Manager who might have forgotten to get back to us. So, then I worked directly with Rohan who was amazing. She was so thoughtful and helpful and was determined to make our Honeymoon special. There is no pool wait service which was really disappointing, but the bar staff in each bar is fun and extremely nice. We did a Cabana one day and the service with a cabana is fantastic. It should just be that kind of service all around and throughout the resort. The housekeeping is great and they will not bother you if you keep your sign out. If you leave the room mid-day and come back, your room will be serviced. Neal and Giovanni with the Entertainment staff are great. Rohan and Filius in Management are fantastic. Sandals will ask you to upon leaving to have your luggage outside your door at 8 a.m. and you will board the shuttle to the airport at 10 a.m. even if you are flying out around 2:30 p.m. as we were. Expect an extremely long travel day arriving and leaving. Overall: The great part of the resort is that you are there with couples and people who are all on their Honeymoon or celebrating their anniversary which makes it so fun and special. There are lots of people to talk and mingle with and if you want peace and quiet, you can get that too in a different pool area. For what we paid for the honeymoon overall, we would probably not return to a Sandals unless it was an EXTREMELY fantastic deal. We were disappointed overall with a few aspects because we are used to getting great service, food, booze, entertainment and amenities with most other AI’s. It is fun that you have access to things like water-skiing, snorkeling, hobie cats and others things for free. If you are certified scuba diver, that is free as well. However, we paid a lot for the trip overall (3x what we normally pay for any AI) and I would not say it was our best trip ever. We paid for the helicopter ride from the airport to the hotel when we arrived and the helicopter canceled on us and never informed us. Rather a Sandals rep told us as soon as we entered the Sandals waiting room at the airport and we know it is not Sandals fault. The ride to the hotel took almost 2 hours and for people who get motion sickness, take the Dramamine!!! I was seconds away from being sick so it is not a fun ride. The roads are winding and small. The ride from the hotel to the airport is quicker. The airport is small and very hot and cramped and you get there WAY too early and there is no WIFI. We had a great trip because the management helped to rectify the issues and we decided to make it great. We were a bit disappointed overall especially for what we paid, but it was a beautiful trip, resort and country!

Amazing Honeymoon Spot!!!

Parma Heights, Ohio

My husband and I had such a great and relaxing 11 day honeymoon at Sandals Grande. The food was spectacular with many different options and the resort itself is paradise. We ended up only doing one excursion (JJ's boat tour) which we both highly recommend! If you can afford the helicopter ride to and from the airport - I would suggest doing so. The ride is lengthy and very windy and bumpy but we survived. Pros: Clean, staff is very friendly, food is very good, plenty of things to do and keep busy if interested. Peter at the swim up bar was our favorite! Cons: The locals on the beach were a bit annoying trying to sell their own boat tours and such, so we did try to avoid the beach here and there. Also, the Sandals Loyalty employees were a bit pushy towards us for booking our next trip. Overall it was a fabulous honeymoon and we will definitely be back!
