Chocolate birthday treat

North Yorkshire, United Kingdom

I stayed here with my partner as part of a birthday trip to St Lucia. We had been in St Lucia (staying in the Ti Kaye resort) for 4 nights and then transferred (chauffeur driven car) on 18th March. The drive took around an hour (St Lucia is very mountainous and has lots of hairpin bends and steep roads!). We were welcomed at the reception desk at the front of the resataurant. We were offered a complementary choice of drink / cocktail from the bar menu. We both chose rum cocktails which were delicious. We sat in the bar area while the paperwork was sorted and our bags were taken to our room. Several other people had gathered in the bar to go on the "bean to bar" tour. (More on that later...) We were then taken to our room and had been upgraded to a luxe lodge (I had mentioned that it was my birthday). There was a complimentary bottle of fizz and come lovely chocolates waiting for us. The room design is very open and has amazing views of the piton and the sea in the distance. There are two sun loungers on the veranda, two chairs and a tea / coffee making area and fridge. Small birds, lizards etc come onto the balocny looking for crumbs from the delicious treats that are left in the fridge to enjoy! if you don't like this, just keep the area clean and tidy. There is no air-con, but a fan over the bed. We didn't need either as the room was cooled by the breeze. A duvet was provided, but we just used a sheet. The bathroom is very spacious and has a shower open to the air. If taking a shower when it's raining outside you will have a mix of hot water and rain water - fun! The pool area has sheltered space near the pool bar and sunbathing spots. There were hardly any guests when we were there due to the virus, so it was very relaxing. We could also sunbathe on our veranda from around 3pm when the sun moved round. We were all-inclusive and enjoyed the menu options and drinks (the chocolate liqueur cocktail is amazing). The service was polite and steady, in a relaxing way. I was lucky enough to be given a complementary "tree to bar" tour. An amazing experience. The first half was all about the cocoa trees and how they are cultivated. I got to graft my own tree, that is registered and labelled and I can visit next time I stay! The second part is taking the ingredients and creating your own chocolate bar. There is a lot of pounding of cocoa nibs!! Great fun and educational too. There were groups of people from other hotels / tours doing this with hotel guests and I suspect it would have been much busier under normal circumstances (cruise ships had been stopped from visiting St Lucia by then.) We went on several walks around the estate (which are mapped for you). We also walked to the sulphur springs and did the visit there. We did get caught in the rain a couple of times so be prepared ! You soon dry off though when the sun comes out. It tended to rain in the mornings - on and off. By the time we left there were hardly any guests, and the hotel closed a couple of days later (along with all the others on the island). I hope the island recovers, and the hotels, all their lovely staff, and others in the tourist industry in St Lucia thrive once again.

Cocoa heaven

London, United Kingdom

We have just completed 5 nights in Hotel Chocolat and leave with extremely fond memories. The hotel is uniquely set in the Rabot estate with breathtaking views of Petit Piton and surrounding jungle. The view from the restaurant and pool area are hard to believe and make the setting truly magical. We stayed in the lead in lodge which still enjoyed Piton views (ask for lodge 4) and the view from the rain shower definitely makes you feel you’ve arrived in paradise. Food was delicious and the addition of Cacao in almost every dish was surprisingly tasty and not overwhelming. We took part in a number of the activities and would highly recommend the estate walk and bean to bar. The only drawbacks I could mention is the service which was quite hit and miss (excluding Marguerite who was fantastic) although this seemed to be an island wide issue across a number of other 5 star establishments. I’m not sure if this was a cultural thing but warm welcoming service doesn’t yet seem to be ingrained in the Saint Lucia hospitality industry. We visited a number of other hotels on the island for various meals and easily preferred Hotel Chocolat. The setting, food and feel of the hotel was unmatched and highly recommend for those wanting an intimate, authentic luxury plantation stay. Also would really advise to have a car so you can have the freedom to explore the surrounding area. Thank you Hotel Chocolat for a fabulous stay!

Tree to bar experience

Head out into the famous Rabot Estate and discover cocoa like never before. Begin with a walk through the estate and the cocoa groves, selecting ripe cocoa beans to harvest right from the tree that will end up in your own chocolate bar. The experience focuses on the less tasty but equally as fascinating stages including; cocoa seedling, fermenting to grinding and mixing.

Cocoa

Bean to bar experience

Included in every stay and a unique selling point of the hotel is its bean to bar experience. This is your chance to become a chocolatier for the day and learn the skills and the processes involved in making your very own sweet treat. Enjoy the tastes of the cocoa beans, see it through to de-shelling and grinding before being able to mix and pour to make your chocolate bar as individual as you.

Boucanier adventures

St Lucia has a dramatic and stunning jagged emerald green coastline. Appreciate this from the sea on the resort's Boucanier on one of their regular trips. Enjoy a trip to the beaches of Pigeon Island or Marigot Bay or head out on a sunset cruise, whale and dolphin watching trip or an underwater exploration. Many of these boat trips are not included and will require pre-booking and are at an additional charge.
