There is clearly some magic at work at Nisbet

London, United Kingdom

One of the things which strikes you when you first arrive at the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club is the number of guests who return to the resort year after year. There is clearly some magic at work at Nisbet - transforming frazzled Brits and Yanks, forcing them to slow down to Caribbean speed. Not so much a paradise - more of a sanctuary from the fast pace of ordinary life. A place to recharge. Nisbet is by no means perfect - but it has charm, and its own way of doing things. And it is difficult not to fall in love with it. You arrive by boat - a six minute bounce along the waves from St Kitts to Oualie Beach in Nevis. On board you are offered free drinks - the record number of beers drunk in one crossing is apparently nine - but after a ten hour flight from the UK its not really what you want, and pretty soon the idea of rushing to do anything seems a little pointless. The well-kept lawn from the Great House to the beach is lined with coconut trees. The view is better than appears in the corporate video. From the beach, and beyond the House, the view of the volcano that dominates Nevis - often topped by clouds that resemble snow - is stunning. Brown pelicans dive bomb into the sea to catch fish, providing entertainment for sunbathers and guests chilling out in the Sea Breeze beach-side bar. We missed the turtle on the beach (other guests saw it the day before we arrived) but at afternoon tea we did see a pig sprint through the plantation, cutting through the tennis courts pursued at a safe distance by Lucy, the security man's dog. On the walk from our room up to the Great House for dinner we saw toads, and once an enormous crab which seemed to have forgotten where the sea was. At night the high-pitched bleeping heard from the terrace where you eat dinner is apparently from small white tree frogs. Despite the noise we never saw one. The food in the hotel is usually good, sometimes very good - but food and drink is expensive in Nevis so choose one of the various plans they offer. We found that food and drink is a large part of the Nisbet rhythm – so you may decide its better to choose a better plan, rather than one you think you can just “get away with”. There is no escaping the cost of wine with dinner. Buying by the glass unusually seemed more cost effective than buying by the bottle. Nevis’ killer bee – a mix of rum and fruit juice is well worth a try. The bar is a great place to meet and chat with other guests. The rooms are well appointed, and well maintained, although our bathroom was a little dated. There are no TVs – a good omission – dropping TV seemed part of the Nisbet experience. The bedroom in our suite was air conditioned, but the sitting room was not which meant that we only used it a little. Wi-fi works fine – I would guess that it wouldn’t withstand streaming Netflix (although we didn’t try), but all our email and web surfing was served well within the available bandwidth. You get coverage throughout the plantation. The hotel is small enough that you get to know the staff and they get to know you too. Most of the staff will introduce themselves to you in the first few days of your stay, and will greet you by name from then on, and pretty soon you will follow their lead. Guests too are encouraged to get to know each other, and the resort at its best sometimes seems more like a house party than a hotel. There are a lot of planned activities which you can hook into if you wish. Calvin, who provides much of the transport for the hotel, provides a three hour tour of the island – which helps guests get an overview of what is on offer. Generally we found the restaurants and beach bars were better than the museums. Our resolve to be active, including our plan to climb the volcano and do the waterfall walk, melted away fast. The island is really more about chilling out than being active. Its better for couples than for families, I would guess. Nevis is unspoiled and less developed than other Caribbean islands. We found our ten day trip was long enough to let us relax and explore it a little. We’re very glad we went

Vacation in Paradise

Shelton, Connecticut

My husband and i just came back from Nisbet Plantation after spending a week from 9/22 to 9/29/2018. He came upon information about Nisbet from a travel book and I looked it up on Trip Advisor..all I saw were 5 star after 5 star reviews from repeat visitors. My focus was on the fact that everyone spoke about it as if they were going back to friends that they loved in a place of peace and beauty. and indeed that is exactly what it is. Peace is found on Nisbet Plantation. You know when you come back from vacation and you think about where you went and you know that there were some things that could perhaps have been somewhat better or some things that you wish you wish might have been done differently. well here's the thing. IT DOESNT MATTER!! Nisbet is the most peaceful, one of the most beautiful, impeccably kept resorts you will ever go to. the staff is extraordinary - Hi Violet!! - Hi Roslyn!!! and it seems all anyone wants to do is make you happy.. the first day my husband and i were there Tim the Manager came up to our table on the beach, introduced himself, asked if he could sit down and said this and I quote. "Is there ANYTHING I can I do for you." seriously what more could you ask? if you are looking for no stress, lovely cottages, impeccable service surrounded by beauty then this is where you need to be. 7 days went by like 7 minutes..not kidding.. i am now back at my job and when it gets overwhelming as jobs do get i think of myself in my beach chair looking out at the ocean and i can feel Nisbet wash over me. p.s. breakfast is AWESOME!!
