Tangalle Holidays

Fishing and unrivalled luxury

The laid-back fishing town of Tangalle – or Tangalla – lies plum in the middle of Sri Lanka’s south coast. A long sweep of shoreline hemmed by serene sandy beaches and thick coconut groves, it hides high-end hotels and rustic coconut shacks in-between.

The town’s fishing harbour – the first man made one in Sri Lanka – is about as lively as it gets in Tangalle. Brave an early-morning alarm and you can watch as animated fishermen auction off their catch, as the sun burns the haze off the horizon.

Either side of the harbour, the coastline unravels to reveal one postcard-worthy beach after the next. Medilla is the perfect place to walk or laze, while Rekawa is a nesting site for several species of turtles.

Strong currents mean swimming is off-limits in many areas, but there are designated, sheltered bays where you can plunge safely into the water, while wave-pummelled swathes like Goyambokka Beach are a haven for surfers.

Just under two hours west of Tangalle lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Galle, home to the Dutch Fort – south Asia’s best-preserved colonial sea fortress, and an hour and a half’s drive in the opposite direction gets you to the vast green wilderness of Yala National Park.
