Kandy Holidays

Sri Lanka's cultural capital city

Sri Lanka’s cultural capital sits in the heart of the island, nestled in the hills on the riverside of the Mahaweli Ganga. It’s perhaps the country’s best known and most popular stop for tourism. So why is Kandy such an important and fascinating city?

The first reason, and definitely top of the list for locals, is that it’s home to the sacred Sri Dalada Maligawa, better known as the Temple of the Tooth Relic. This centuries-old monument is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Buddhism. Venture through the surrounding grounds that give way to the grand architecture and elaborate decoration that make up the temple. Marvel at the intricate detail of the temple’s design and take in the smell of hundreds of incense sticks burning around the grounds.

A five minute drive round the corner from the Temple of the Tooth is the Botanical Gardens. These gardens have been cultivated for over 600 years and feature plant species from across the globe.

The hotels around Kandy often put on a traditional show in the evening. These performances take aspects from local customs and dances. From the decorative costumes, to fire dancing and acrobatics – these shows never fail to entertain.

“Remember to dress modestly at the Temple of the Tooth since it’s an incredibly sacred site in Buddhism. It’s so beautiful and it would be a shame to miss out on because of your clothes”
