Galle Holidays

Dutch, Portuguese and British history in one town

Home to UNESCO World Heritage Site the Dutch Fort, Galle’s history dates back centuries. Step back in time as you wander through and explore the boutique shops that lie behind the historic walls. The Portuguese and Dutch heritage is ever so apparent throughout the city, with beautiful examples of colonial architecture such as the Dutch Reformed Church and the British-built Galle Lighthouse, set on the eastern end of the fort.

Once a strategic port, the fort originally served as a bustling centre of maritime trade. Today, the fort’s richly preserved UNESCO status and listed buildings bear indelible reminders of the European colonialists who built this bastion, and exude an easy calm that’s worlds away from the colourful new town and its market-lined streets.

Take a walking tour with a local guide to delve into the rich and seemingly endless history of this important corner of the island. But don't think Galle is nothing but heritage, the city today is home to the infamous Galle International Stadium, known as the most picturesque cricket ground in the world thanks to it unobstructed views of the Indian Ocean.

Galle is also home to some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful hotels. Boutique properties such as The Fortress and Fort Bazaar are ideal for those wanting a more intimate experience, while the larger hotels like the Amari Galle offer a more resort based stay.

Top Tips from our Experts

Destination Specialist

Galle is a huge contrast in comparison to Kandy, it’s a livelier and more upbeat area. An ideal location for those who are looking to get out and about and explore Sri Lanka's history and culture. Nearby churches, restaurants, small local shops, and the chance to explore the fort itself are all easily accessible by foot or by tuk tuk.
