The Blue Train

The ideal way to see South African countryside

In the 19th century a dream was born – a dream of linking Africa’s vast south to the north by rail. Passing by the awe-inspiring mountain ranges that dot the continent, through the arid desert landscapes, over untamed savannah grasslands teeming with wildlife all the way from Cape Town to Cairo. While the dream wasn't fulfilled, the magnificent Blue Train was born which now traverses South Africa – covering some 994 miles (1,600km) in a 31-hour journey.

The Blue Train has become synonymous with the ultimate in luxury and personal service. This overnight journey travels through some of South Africa's most diverse and spectacular scenery between the historic town of Pretoria and the iconic city of Cape Town (the route also runs in reverse). In addition, a new routing from Pretoria to Kruger National Park, one of the most well-known and special places to go on safari, has also been added as an option.

The modern train – with air-suspension and extensive sound proofing – provides the perfect setting for your enjoyment as the country passes by your eyes. Each cabin provides elegance and comfort in a surprisingly spacious room. An elegant and relaxing lounge during the day transforms into a subtly-lit bedroom at night with goose-down and 100 per cent percale-cotton bedding, with an individually-controlled air-conditioning system, underfloor heating and opulent marble and gold-fitted bathrooms. For the ultimate experience, upgrade and stay in a luxury cabin which offers a larger living space and long and luxurious bath tub. Be sure to use the services of your personal butler who is there to aid you in any way required.

Dining is all part of the experience: on board chefs regularly refresh their menus as they prepare their signature dishes using the freshest of local ingredients. From Karoo lamb, ostrich and venison, to Knysna oysters and other award-winning Cape cultivars, all artfully presented in delicate crystal or on fine china.

Our Experts Recommend:
  • Upgrading your suite for even more luxury and a bath tub.
  • Bringing elegant attire for an evening of exquisite dining and fine wines.
  • This as an ideal option for those in search of a memorable overnight experience.
  • Perfect as a luxurious alternative to flying across the country.
