Sun City - Palace of the Lost City

Architectural wonder surrounded by a botanical jungle

A legendary destination designed by dreamers for luxury-seekers. Since 1992, The Palace of the Lost City has enthralled visitors from all over the globe. Its unique setting in South Africa – on an extinct volcanic site among the Pilanesberg mountains – is matched by the inspired architecture and passionate attention to detail for which The Palace of the Lost City is renowned.

This luxury five-star hotel in Sun City has integrated the natural beauty of its surroundings into its design, taking architectural and interior themes from the legend of a lost African tribe to capture the essence of The Palace. Think richly-woven colours, faux elephant tusks, sculptured bronze and crystal and jungle cascades. The magnificence of the wild landscape is depicted through lions, kudus, birds and beasts of all kinds; these are immortalised in statues, stone carvings, mosaic illustrations, vaulted ceilings, dazzling flame-topped towers and in artist Danie de Jager's bronze wildlife sculptures. With fresco ceilings above and ancient tiles below, you are left to stand in awe at the sheer scale and grandeur of the masterpiece that is The Palace of the Lost City.

Tragic current state of affairs

Cape Town Central, South Africa

I have been one of the last Palace supporters - despite the fact that it clearly is a hotel that does not nearly live up to international standards. This time around we did not stay at the Palace, so I just have to make that clear - however my experience has left me cold and I doubt I would ever return. On Wednesday evening we ate at the Grill room. What a complete RIP OFF! Coming from Cape town we are used to prices that reflect the quality, but this was shocking to say the least. South Africans should never pay R320 for a piece of fillet. Service was SLOW, no music or ambience in the restaurant at all. Overall an experience that will not be repeated. On the second day I went on a site tour to view the upgraded rooms - an even bigger joke. I challenge anyone to see the before and after product. Again, I will not stay here again. All this aside, the reason for my review is the SHOCKING, homophobic service received from a SECURITY guard!!! On Thursday evening the 9th of August, at around 10pm my husband and I wanted to go up to the Palace for a night cap. Arriving at security he looked at me and my husband with disgust and once he saw us holding hands he immediately told us that we were not allowed at the Palace if we did not make a booking. What a JOKE???? In 2019 a business has the cheek to turn away customers. In my more than 15 years coming to the Palace with my family and husband this has never happened to us before. I dined there the night before, I have breakfast there in the morning and now we are not allowed a night cap in a completely EMPTY hotel! Sun International - this is disgusting!!!! Loyal South African guests deserve better. I will take matters further trust me, as I do not appreciate homophobic comments or attitudes from fellow citizens!

Grandiose Opulence 360 degree views of the Lost City and Sun City from the highest Gold Done on top of the Palace Hotel

Your drive over the bridge towards The Palace of the Lost City Hotel is like you are being drawn into a movie scene of Africa welcoming you in. The magnificent tall dark wood spear shaped doors at the entrance are a magnificent work of art. The Bronze sculptures of iconic sout African animals adorn the paths and walkways some with water fountains at night these sculptures come alive with lights. All the oversized furniture and railings are hand carved in solid dark wood reflecting the warmth of Africa. The rooms, restaurants, swimming pools and gardens are all meticulously laid out. The extensive variety of food served at breakfast and dinner is fit for a King. The staff are very well dressed, very polite helpful and welcoming. Is really an out of this world experience and is worth it's weight in gold. Guests are treated like kings and queens in your very own Castle
