Amazing!!

Morgan Hill, California

On a scale of 1 to 5 I would like to rate Lion Sands about an 8! Lion Sands was our last stop in a 29 day Africa trip. We stayed at 4 camps in Botswana plus Lion Sands. All were outstanding and different but Lion Sands was the best. Each of the other camps had a number of strong points over the others and one or two minor things not as good as the others. I can't think of anything that could have been better at Lion Sands. Details: 1. Our guide was Francois and Tracker Rector. The only camp we stayed at that utilized a tracker. These guys were amazing at their ability to track and locate animals that we had no idea were there. Highlights of our game drives: tracking and getting close to two different male leopards on the ground on different occasions; a total of seven white rhinos on three different drives; the one wildebeest we saw on our entire trip; first time ever seeing wild dogs (a pack of 5); bring within a few feet of a pride of lions of 4 females and 11 cubs; elephants galore including the grand finale-watching two big herds with babies enter and exit a pond from a blind. Most amazing drives we have ever had and this is our third trip to Africa. We also stayed in the Kingston Treehouse our last night. What a blast, being totally alone above the jungle for the night. Only regret is we should have skipped the shortened game drive and went earlier to the treehouse to enjoy the afternoon and sunset longer. Treehouse is a once in a lifetime opportunity you must do if staying at Lions Sands. We also went on two optional activities: a bush walk where you take the jeep to a spot and then walk with two guides (who both carry loaded rifles, just in case) and a visit to two preschools and an IT center that Jade from Lions Sands was instrumental in setting up. Very impressive work on the schools. I would recommend both activities which can be done before or after lunch so you don't miss any game drives. We stayed in Room #1 which is one of three suites. It was outstanding. Newly redone, very modern. Includes an outdoor shower which I used twice and a decent size personal outdoor pool. (Was refreshing but very cold-took a short dip.) All the public areas of Lion Sands (not the rooms) burned down in June, 2017 and just reopened May 1, 2018 so everything is like new. Since they also redid the rooms, they have that new house smell. Service from the staff was outstanding. Lucky was our butler and she did a fabulous job of meeting my unusual eating habits and always had a smile and was close by. Housekeeping was excellent. One night we went to the room after turndown but before dinner and the housekeeper came back after we went to dinner to replace the one towel we had used! Meals are all from a menu which has a number of options for each meal but they are also very flexible in making changes to the menu options. FYI, you can put tips for guide, tracker, general staff on your room bill in case you are conserving cash. If you have the option, fly into Skukuza airport which is much closer to the lodge than Nelspruit airport which is the other option but a two hour drive. Two other good things: jeep are open air-no tops so much better for picture taking. Also, since Lion Sands is a private game reserve (across the river from Kruger) the drivers can go off road whereas at Kruger they need to stay on the road. This made a big difference to us as a number of significant sightings were off road. Between my wife and I we have over 3,000 photos. Going to be quite a task to edit those down for picture books! We are already planning our four trip to Africa for 2020 (probably east Africa) but will definitely make a 4 night stay at Lion Sands (including a treehouse) part of that trip.

Location, location, location!

The location on the banks of the Sabi River is gold! The landscape and all the wildlife it attracts are diverse and serene. And the Lodge rooms are easily more than adequate in size with great views of the river close by. Also stocked very well with all my favourite beverages, and I did try some. And then some again. The cuisine is next to none. Dinner and breakfast is all I could stay for which is the tragedy as the meals were very MORE'ish!
