1 star being sold as a 5 star hotel.

Johannesburg, South Africa

I will start by saying I have come to Fairlawns many times over the years for anything from spa treatments, to special valentines dinners and short weekend stays. It was for this reason that I decided to come again, only to be shocked beyond belief. You will see I gave them a 5 star review before in 2014. My intent with this new review is thus with no upfront ill intentions and to just share a true horrific experience. I am not going to write a long story here but below events over the last 24 hours. You decide. 1) The bath was leaking on arrival and unusable 2) My wife became very sick after a toasted chicken mayo which we at first did not believe could be from a fine dining restaurant and hotel 3) Today my wife found a hair and piece of yellow plastic in another meal - this explains why she became sick from other meals 4) The mattress has stains that looks like wee 5) The mattress feels like you sleeping on cardboard, and just by looking at it you can see its broken beyond repair as its dipping on both sides 6) We complained about the mattress and the maintenance team tried to convince us nothing was wrong and just turned it around, so that the main problem was on the other side of the bed. So tonight my wife is getting the really bad side. 7) They then just left without making the bed, and even left the side tables they pushed away where they left them, for us to fix up the room again. I really don't know if we hit bad luck, or if the management and ownership changed in recent years, but one thing is sure, the wheels are falling off all around us. Ive added photos in case anyone thinks we being unreasonable.

Disappointing

Chicago, Illinois

We planned to use this as our travel hotel in Jo-burg while we transitionws between Safari and Seychelles. We stayed there one night and it was fine, nothing exceptional but a fine room to sleep in and a nice breakfast. However, we were able to revise our travel to avoid needing to go back through Jo-burg and therefore didn't need to stay there again. Even thoughwe gave them 5 days notice they are still charging us for our room and won't issue a refund. Clearly just a money grab as we even went on their website the day after we notified them and they advertised rooms able tombe canceled on 24 hours notice. But they would not honor that for us. Clear they had our money (because of our travel agent - different issue) and decided to keep it - and I'm not going to spend the time trying to chase that (which they probably know). So average experience on the stay but awful customer service practices so would suggest avoiding this hotel. Of if not, make sure you don't prepay. Shady practices like this just bother me and should not be supported. Stay at your own risk.
