Bit chaotic

England, United Kingdom

It is some distance out from Oudtshoorn which is a nuisance. Resort is spread among a number of chalets with nice grounds. Covered parking. Normal amenities in room, a rather small corner bath that I couldn't reasonably use being quite tall but a good shower. Noisy fridge in room with only some water provided. An annoying person on check-in tried to organise me for the next few days even though my interest was mainly in getting to the room. First night stayed had their dinner which seems to have been a buffet meal but was disorganised, poorly explained, and poorly staffed. Cooking was generally okay. Breakfast was reasonable, fruit, cereals, juice, cooked breakfast etc. I think it might be more comprehensive when there were more guests - only had 3 tables on one morning. General service was slow and seemed to be a lack of communication amongst the staff. Free laundry was a nice touch. There was a matriculation party on the second night but it wrapped up by 10:30 so no complaints on the noise. (Hotel ratings for rooms should be a 4 but tripadvisor interface isn't allowing any more than a 2!)

Guest or hindrance?

Burnley, United Kingdom

I have read with interest those reviews that precede this and wonder why my wife and I did not get the same service others seem to have enjoyed. Picture the scene. Following a five hour car journey from Stellenbosch to Oudtshoorn and on arrival at the De Opstal Country Lodge we were shown where to park by a polite young gentlemen who helped us with our luggage to lodge where we would be staying for the night. We were then shortly thereafter told by his superior that the bar was closed (it was 5.00pm), the restaurant would not be opening but there were many restaurants 10km back down the road in Stellenbosch. The reason? The lodge would be hosting a wedding reception the day after and staff were too busy to deal with guests as the were preparing the grounds and banqueting area for the wedding the day after. Not the type of welcome we had experienced during our previous ten days in South Africa at other establishments. On our return from a very pleasant restaurant, and due to an extremely long day we retired to bed around 10.00pm. We were however kept awake by marauding, loud mouthed, drunken individuals who had seemingly decided to call into the lodge to hold a barbecue and drink heavily until 2.00 - 3.00am. Or were they in fact guests attending the wedding on the following day? There was no intervention by the management of the lodge to move the individuals on. Their departure was signalled by the slamming of several car doors and revving loudly of engines. The following morning after a mediocre breakfast the proprietress approached us informing us that she had allocated us a junior member of staff to help us with our bags when leaving. We took that to mean “get out we have a wedding to prepare for”. The member of staff waited outside our lodge for 20-30 minutes. Will I be going back here? Never. Would I recommend it? What do you think?
