Destination Highlights
  • Take a guided tour of an ostrich farm
  • Explore Swartberg and Gamkaberg nature reserves
  • Visit the Cango Caves – Africa's largest show cave system
  • Take a wine tour and sample local vintages
  • Dine at restaurants and delis which offer the best of local produce
  • Nature Reserves

Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world, producing the best feathers, leather products, and ostrich meat. It is also home to about 400 ostrich farms, including the Safari Show Farm and the Highgate Ostrich Show Farm which offer tours and entertaining shows, or the opportunity to ride an ostrich. Throughout the region are opulent sandstone ‘ostrich palaces’ that have survived from the town’s feather boom in the early-20th century. Visit the CP Nel Museum to see displays exhibiting the history of the ostrich feather boom.

  • Cango Caves

Oudtshoorn is nestled in the fertile Klein Karoo valley and surrounded by the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges. This ideal location makes it perfect for exploring the surrounding nature reserves. Make your way to the remote Gamkaberg Nature Reserve to see endangered Cape mountain zebras, leopards, and black backed jackals. Pet cheetahs, see tigers, or let a giant python wind its way around your neck at Cango Wildlife Ranch.

  • Wine Tour

These spectacular caves present a world of unique scenery; calcite and limestone masterpieces shaped by centuries of dripping water. The dripstone caverns have vast halls filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and helictites (limestone formations growing in odd directions). Explore subterranean wonderland in the first six chambers on the standard tour or take a longer adventure tour to see more.
