Knysna Holidays

So treacherous to sailors that it never became a major port, the entrance to Knysna's tranquil blue-green lagoon is guarded by the towering natural defences of the Knysna Heads. These dramatic sandstone buttresses funnel the pounding Indian Ocean through their narrow channel, creating sheltered waters beyond their rocky embrace.

Situated in the heart of the Garden Route, Knysna (pronounced ny-znah) is known for secluded bays, pristine beaches and scenic forest vistas. With its temperate climate, here, you can immerse yourself in endless outdoor adventures – from sedate to adrenaline-fuelled - all-year round. Spend time on the serene lagoon on a catamaran tour or kayak; soak up breath-taking views from the hiking paths; explore expansive indigenous forests and bio-diverse fynbos as you look out for the elusive and exotic Knysna loerie; and embrace nature, as your heart rate quickens, with mountain biking, surfing or paragliding.

Besides the appeal of Knysna's natural beauty, the small town offers boutiques and craft shops, galleries, food markets and coffee shops. Swing by the harbour and waterfront area for low-key nightlife and relax with an icy cocktail as the sun sets over The Heads.

Not just a pretty face, Knysna is also famous for its cultivated oysters and locally-brewed beer. The Knysna Oyster Company has grown oysters in the lagoon since 1949; take a tour and taste the fresh, nutty oysters in the restaurant afterwards. Most locals will tell you they are best served with a beer from Mitchell's, one of the best micro-breweries in South Africa.

  • Featherbed Nature Reserve

**Closed until April 2018 due to fire damage** Knysna's sweeping coastal views form a rousing backdrop for a round of golf. The award-winning Pezula Championship Course blends seamlessly with the gorgeous Southern Cape landscape. In a valley sheltered from the sea breeze, Simola Golf Club was designed by Jack Nicklaus. And Knysna Golf Club's challenging water hazards are rewarded with gentle strolls through tree-lined fairways.

  • Knysna Elephant Park

Home to the endangered blue duiker antelope, a tour of this private nature reserve perched on the western head of Knysna is a must. Take in the windswept panoramas of the town, lagoon and ocean, and then follow your guide through forests, onto cliffs and into caves, learning about the reserve's ecology and wildlife. Keep an eye out for the local black African oyster catcher, one of the rarest coastal birds in South Africa.
