Deluxe tented suites amid Shamwari's rugged beauty

Sit back and absorb the pulse of the African bush from your viewing deck, nestled in the trees lining the bed of the river. Framed by riverine forest and overlooking river pools, you'll spot graceful antelope venturing for a twilight drink and crowned eagles gliding on the darkening sky.

Shamwari Bayethe Lodge offers the ultimate in safari accommodation – each of the 12 deluxe tented suites is styled with a rustic yet elegant contemporary scheme and has its own private plunge pool. The name – Bayethe, pronounced 'by-ye-ti' – comes from a warm African greeting which translates to 'I salute you' – an apt name for this intimate and welcoming retreat.

During your stay, explore some of the 25,000 hectares of diverse landscapes in early morning and evening game viewing drives in open Land Rovers, guided nature walks and bird watching excursions. Being a private game reserve, safari vehicles in Shamwari are kept to a minimum, so you'll benefit from a more exclusive experience here.

Preservation is of the utmost importance at Shamwari – it is one of South Africa's most high-profile and innovative wildlife conservation areas – and the reserve incorporates the Ian Player Rhino Centre, the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary and its own Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Animal Hospital. The Shamwari Game Reserve has also achieved acclaimed Fair Trade Tourism certification.

Contrast the exhilaration of safari adventures with down time at the Bush Relaxation Retreat; soaking in your freestanding bath tub; reclining on the outdoor deck, beside the generous swimming pool; and al fresco dining, under the African stars.

Fantastic experience

London, United Kingdom

We stayed for two nights. Most of what I would normally say about the standard two night safari has been said before on here, but in short this place was a perfect safari experience. Food was great the whole time we were there and you definitely never go hungry. Our ranger for our 4 safari drives was Vuyo - he was incredibly knowledgable about the reserve and the animals and became a first class barman when the sundowners were being served. We saw all the big 5, as well as a Cheetah, Hippos, Giraffes and loads of other wild animals. If you want to do safari when driving the garden route then go to Shamwari and stay at Bayethe. The staff were faultless and the accommodation also excellent (personal jacuzzi is a nice touch). Would 100% recommend.

Luxury game lodge

Farnham, United Kingdom

We have just had the most wonderful time at this game reserve. Accommodation is first class and service excellent. There is so much game to see and our ranger Headman was very knowledgeable and amusing also. It is lovely that each ranger sits with his group of six for breakfast and sometimes dinner. So nice to get to know them a little better. Food is fab and staff are courteous and cannot do enough to help. Thoroughly recommend.
