Luxurious lodge beside a meandering river

Settlers Drift is a luxury tented lodge, situated in the ruggedly beautiful wilderness of the Kariega Game Reserve. Named after the 1820 settlers who guided their wagons through valleys and across Bushmans River here, the unspoilt beauty of Kariega will make you feel as though time has stood still.

Nestled in the riverine forest, the lodge offers just nine spacious tented suites with stylish bedroom and living areas featuring atmospheric billowing ceilings; en suite bathrooms with freestanding bathtubs; and indoor/outdoor showers and secluded viewing decks. The sides of the suites can easily be raised to reveal panornamic views over the verdant valley.

Stay here and you'll enjoy twice-daily game drives, providing the opportunity to spot the Big Five – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and Cape buffalo – along with an an array of other game species roaming across the savannah, through the woodlands and drinking at waterholes.

Time at Settlers Drift perfectly contrasts wildlife viewing – games drives; a boat cruise along the Kariega River; and kayaking along Bushmans River – with relaxation by the infinity pool and invigorating spa treatments in the sala. Finish your day at the lodge's restaurant – with cuisine that will appeal to the most discerning of gourmands and where wine flows freely – before cosying up around the fire pit to trade safari stories with your fellow guests.

Don't think twice - Go !

United Kingdom

Such an amazing experience, and a very well presented one at that. For us, it started as we took the drive from the main road up to the lodge, where we passed several antelope, then had to stop for a giraffe. We were greeted as we got out of the car, which is a nice touch, then settled in for minor check in formalities inside the lodge. Baggage was whisked away into our room as we waited in the lodge, then a few minutes later we were whisked of to our room by Zamu. Wow ! That's my idea of camping ! Nice comfortable double bed, great shower, great bath with a great view, mini bar, tea and coffee, log burner and the most amazing view over the valley where we watched giraffe, ostrich and antelope stroll around. Personally, I loved there was no tv in the room. The view is surely more than enough, so nobody should surely be passing time watching a tv anyway ? Meals are all very good with plenty of options. Great quality food, and we enjoyed eating at different tables and different locations. The staff are friendly, and I wish I had taken a couple of names of those who deserved a quick mention, but suffice to say, we were very pleased with it. We sat in the lodge reading etc a few times, and they check if you need anything, and are pleased to bring it. My wife took a massage in the spa and was very pleased, and the spa price is absolutely fine (she has paid significantly more most of the time). Finally, the game drives - it is touch to find superlatives, but we were thrilled. Each one was different, but our guide Wayne positively contributed in every way to the experience. Knowledgeable, friendly, patient and actually, good company too. Obvious that he loves his work and is passionate about it. We felt comfortable and safe at all times, and he went the extra mile (sometimes literally) to make sure we got the 'right' experience. I hope he gets to read this, although I'm sure he's used to it ! Given the chance, we would return. I have no hesitation in recommending it.

Wow, wow, wow. What more can I say? Well, much more actually...

Northampton, United Kingdom

Kariega Game Reserve and particularly Settler’s Drift exceeded my expectations. The cruise along the river into camp was the perfect start. Kariega was a breath of fresh air; dramatic landscapes, towering hills, areas of open plains bordered with vibrant thick vegetation. Kariega is the closest thing to Jurassic Park I ever seen; and I’ve been to Hawaii! (where it was actually filmed!) At Settlers Drift, the main lodge, dining areas, lounge, infinity swimming pool and glorious tented suites are all superb. The service, guiding and quality of the food are the cherry on top of this hugely satisfying cake. Each meal we had, whether that be eggs benedict at breakfast, a delightful lunch buffet or fillet steak at dinner, everything was very professionally presented, perfectly prepared and tasted delicious. Our room (Number 9) was near perfect. Great size, very comfortable bed, beautifully styled and spotlessly clean. I also thought the glass walls/doors that open up the room to the elements was a great feature. The managers during our visit, Orelie and Jo, as well as all the staff in camp, were very welcoming, friendly and really made us feel at home throughout our stay. Perhaps the star of the show was our fantastic guide Bianca. Bianca’s knowledge of the flora and fauna was only surpassed by her wonderful enthusiasm and incredible work ethic. What really impressed me during our game drives was Bianca’s ability to make each activity an interactive experience. While of course the game drives throughout the reserve were fantastic, it was walking with giraffe, posing with a tortoise, handling a millipede and the termite tasting that really made this safari a truly experience unique. Overall my experience of Kariega was exceptional however unfortunately as Kariega was right towards the beginning of our trip, my partner and I spent the remainder of our time in South Africa wishing we were back at Settlers Drift!
