Amazing

I was shocked by how spacious the rooms are. Also how wonderful the staff are, they try remember every guest and around the pool they helped me move to get the maximum amount of sunlight and always made sure I had water! The views from the swimming pool were beautiful and I hope to come back one day! I cannot fault this hotel.

A bit disappointing the second time around

Cape Town

This was my second stay in about 18 months at the Oriental, and in comparison to my first stay, I was underwhelmed. The hotel had 100% occupancy, and some of the public areas are just too small to handle this level of guest load. The lobby was perpetually crowded, breakfast in Melt Cafe each morning was a scrum, and the gym in the morning was uncomfortably full. Some of the little touches that define a really good 5 star hotel also seemed to be missing; no daily fruit basket in the room, no chocolate on the pillow with the turn down service (which is rudimentary, at best). There was construction inside the hotel during my stay, which was noisy and intrusive, with no advance warning or notification on the website or at check-in. It was impossible to get a drink in any of the bars after 23.30, which in a 5 star hotel is totally unacceptable. There were multiple events and conferences during my stay, which just compounded the general level of noise and activity. Having stayed at multiple Mandarin Oriental properties throughout the world, I can honestly say that this was my weakest stay. On the plus side, the food quality and selection at breakfast was good. And I would be remiss if I did not comment on the staff and service levels. Outstanding. This is the one area where the hotel has maintained it's standards. The staff are without doubt the hotel's greatest asset, and their biggest redeeming feature. If it were not for them, I would have rated my stay 3 stars.
