Great hotel, beautiful location, excellent food, lots of activities

Guildford, United Kingdom

We stayed here for 10 nights in May 2018, and overall had a great stay, but unfortunately were very unlucky with the weather and had a lot of rain most days which they say is very unusual in the "dry/best" month of May ! Hotel = As the resort is very large, they provide golf cart shuttles around the north and south areas. When the golf buggy transfers work, they are amazing and you can be from your room in the south, right up to the North beach within a few mins. But we sometimes found them a little few and far between so ended up walking quite a lot of the way - which is fine, but you have to allow enough time as its quite a walk. Beaches = The South beach is idyllic - really quiet, no-one around, and as there are 3-4 pools just off the beach, if there are people around, they will be there rather than on the beach, so it makes for great photos of an empty beach ! The north is much busier as this is where all the watersports are (paddleboards, kayaks, windsurfing, sailing (hobie cats, lasers, optimists) and snorkelling). Rooms = We were in room 323 which was exactly the block we were hoping to be in - furthest away from everything, no bar, restaurant, kids clubs etc so was nice and quiet but the pool area did still have a number of children around. Restaurants / bars = Breakfast in Corossol was lovely and quiet at 7:30-8:30, but busier 9-10. Also pretty quiet for dinner 8-9:30 but as a consequence some of the dishes run out. They say to book the other restaurants (everything except Corossol) 1 day in advance, but when we tried to book a few, they were fully booked already. We also noticed there were a few very large groups when we stayed which took over an entire section of Corossol, and completely booked out some of the other restaurants on some evenings eg Adam & Eve was "private booking" 3 nights a week, and closed 1 night, so only available to book on the other 3 nights and therefore got fully booked really quickly. We really enjoyed Seselwa as it had a nice relaxed beach feel and amazing Wagu beef starter, and Australian steak & chips for main. Adam and Eve was possible the best Asian food we have ever had. An amazing satay starter - served on a hot charcoal bed for a really authentic taste, and a wonderful massaman with so much meat ! A glass of wine is around 115+ RS, Seabrew beer is 105, large water is 70. We had read from other reviews that there used to be a Happy Hour at Zee bar in the evening, but when we enquired, it seems they don't do that anymore. You can buy snacks/drinks from outside shops - if you turn right out of the North gate, you will see a small shop about 100m up on the left of the road which sell coke/sprite for 17Rs a bottle. Or if you turn right out of the South gate, there is a shop half way between there and the church (5mins walk). Activities = We walked the Ros Lepa trail which had some lovely view points, and nice deserted beach with the lovely granite boulders either end. You get to it by walking up the road where the ziplining/rock climbing starts - walk up the road to the jungle villas, then there are good signs / white arrows all along the trail. But be prepared to walk in actual jungle - so you might need bug spray, and better shoes than flipflops ! Took about 1hr for the whole trip. Kayaking/paddleboards = You can take a single / double kayak, or paddleboards (free to use) for 1hr from either North or South beach, but in both locations you have to stay within the bay / where they can see you, so can't go too far. You cannot take them out of the bay, or into the mangrove. The Fitness Centre lead a 2hr kayak tour into the mangroves most days depending on the tide. 200Rs each. Snorkelling = We tried snorkelling all around the north beach Port Launay bay and afraid we didn't think it was very good. There is some coral and fish, but on every occasion we tried, the visibility was terrible, and there wasn't much to see. There is a channel of sand up the middle of the bay, and the coral is directly either side of that. Beyond that, closer to land, there is only seaweed and terrible visibility. The Boat House arrange twice daily snorkelling trips around the headland into Bay Ternay for 2hrs for 990Rs per person, so I think the snorkelling is better there. Sunset = Can only really be seen from the North beach, or for a better view, walk 10mins up from Cyann/zip line area up the road, pass the villas etc until you see the sign at the end of the road for "Ros Lepa" trail. 1min into the trail and it opens up to granite boulders where you can sit and get a great sunset view. But bring insect repellent, and a torch for the way home. Sunset in May was 6:15pm and by 6:30 its dark ! Waterfall walk = At low tide, you can cross straight from the mangrove end of the South beach up to the main road by the church, otherwise you have to come out of the South gate, turn right and walk up to the church (10mins). From there, there is a road on the left of the church that you follow for about 5-10mins until you see a man at a gate where you pay 25Rs each. Only 2mins from there and you are at the 30-40m high waterfall. Alternatively the Fitness Centre lead the trip every Sunday for 200Rs. Morne Blanc hiking trail = We caught Bus Route 14 from outside South gate (timetable available from Guest Relations), and took about 25mins to go up Sans Soucis road where it drops you right at the start of the trail. It was about 1.5hrs return hike, going up a great jungle path and wonderful views all down the West coast of Mahe (including the Ephelia hotel) from the top. Diving = We booked a few dives with the school on the north beach, and although the dives were fine, we didnt think the dive master was very interested in promoting the dives to us at all. Didnt ask any questions about our experience, didn't go into any detail about where they go, what there is to see. Basically just said "name and room number and see you tomorrow" ! Travel companies = There is a "partners lounge" near reception where there are reps from 3 companies - Masons, Creole, 7degrees South, and also a hire car company. So you can easily arrange any day trips through any of them. We used Masons for both our airport transfers, and a day trip to Praslin & La Digue. It was 5850Rs for 2 ppl for the day trip, but we didnt compare that with the other companies. It was a very good, full day trip (6am-8pm) and we saw a lot, but it was a long, busy day with 4 ferry crossings. Tips = Bring lots of insect repellent, both for mosquitos at night and if you walk in the jungle, but also for sand flies on the beach as we both got a lot of bites during our stay. Summary: We thought the hotel was lovely, well run, good service, lots of do, and great food. We had hoped there might be a pool just for adults as we did find there were more children than we expected all over the hotel, and it meant there were no quiet pools to relax by. We would come back as the hotel does have everything you need, but just hope for better weather next time, and perhaps hire a car to explore more of the island, or even stay a few days at the other Constance on Praslin, or on La Digue for a few days.

Stunning resort, but..

Johannesburg, South Africa

We visited at the end of April and left the kids home for the first time in a while! After visiting Mauritius a number of times we took the plunge and decided to opt for the Seychelles this time - generally quite a bit more expensive compared to Mauritius - more comparable to the Maldives. The island certainly got a bit more from Mother Nature when compared to Mauritius and The good: Ephelia’s location is probably one of the best on Mahé, almost on a peninsula with North and South facing beaches which means you are always protected from the wind. The resort has quite a few pools, bars and restaurants spread out hence one never has a sense of the true size of the resort. Rooms are really beautiful, spacious and well equipped, even the ‘Junior Suites’. The Spa is simply spectacular with various communal facilities available to all residents. The resort features 4 restaurants serving excellent food with Cyann in particular featuring exceptional and creative cuisine - we enjoyed a Japanese degustation with saké pairing which was world class to say the least. A nice touch is a sommelier at each of the restaurants who proved very knowledgeable and able to assist in wine selection. Lindo in particular impressed. The not so good & tips Firstly be aware that the Seychelles typically does not offer all inclusive options so budget for a sizable booze bill - all resorts overcharge but these guys do not hold back (import duties etc. were mentioned but a quick look on the customs website dispelled this). Also rather opt for the half board option as full board adds USD38 or so per person which only covers lunch - lots of poolside options available for half that and of course then you have the flexibility of going into town. Beaches in the Seychelles are all public. We found in particular the North beach frequented by day visitors who inevitably spill over into the loungers and even the pool at Cyann. Not a real issue but one does feel a little less at ease leaving valuables around. The service wasn’t always on point - Air Seychelles left our bag in Johannesburg and it only arrived the next day - the hotel left is under the impression that they are doing everything they possibly can to get it to us soonest when in fact they did nothing whatsoever - not their issue, but then don’t create the expectation; A request for a transfer simply ignored despite 3 calls and an in person visit to Guest Relations; Room only made after 14:00; A good hiking route (Ros Lepa) was simply overgrown and not well marked - we were told it would immediately be attended to and we will be advised - still waiting; The resort is spread over a large area and guests are transferred between rooms and the main complex / North&South beaches by golf cart but these are simply not frequent enough - if we managed to get a lift 1/10 times it would be a lot as my Garmin watch’s 20,000 steps a day would attest (perhaps not a bad thing given all the eating and drinking!) We witnessed the resort’s GM (Mr Duchenne) enjoying a salad one afternoon and ordered the same the next day - it was hardly recognisable! He should find another way to do quality control! All in a stunning resort but better value to be found elsewhere. Which I guess is the Constance view - we don’t seek guests looking for value! Which I do get, understand and accept!
