Perfect Getaway

Monaco

This review comes in two parts…our view and our experience of some of the other reviewers negative experiences, as they were enough to concern me when booking. First our experience. On a scale of 1 to 10, the resort and the staff get at least 9.5 and that's being harsh. In terms of the overall experience it was at least 20! First off, the one downside is the beaches are not Anze Lazio over on Praslin. Then again that rates as one the best in the world. The beaches are white sand but as soon as you get in the water there are rocks. Its GREAT for snorkeling, less so for just jumping in. The staff are terrific. Karen, our GEM, was always available to organize, book, and generally help out. She was there when we needed, and absent when we wanted space. Could not have asked for anything more. The girls at the spa were equally amazing. Christina and the two massuses Yanti and Carole. Nothing was too much. Food wise, it took us a few days to figure things out. You can eat at either of the two restaurants or at your villa, no extra charge for the latter. The menu is limited, especially at lunch time, until you realize that the menu is as my wife like’s to put it merely a list of available ingredients. In this case, that was actually confimed by Chefs Mohan and Yousef as well as the Panjay who runs the restaurants. So crab and avocado is no problem at all, and is amazing. Yousef also gave us a Creole cooking class with Octopus curry which isn’t on the menu but I still ordered it again the following day. We did day trips to Praslin and Big Sister. Strongly recommend both. Don’t spend too much time at Valley de Mai, simply because you will want as much time as possible at Anze Lazio to enjoy lunch and the amazing beach there. Now to address negative reviews 1. It starts with everything you consume, someone immediately chases you around with a bill to sign. OUR EXPERIENCE: We experienced nothing of the sort. Personally we’re used to the South of France where getting the bills takes longer than the meal. The staff at Zil were perfect, it was presented after one was done but without having to hunt for it 2. Also I couldnt get over the fact, that it costs 180 Euros for a speedboat transfer, that takes all of 15 mins from the nearby island where you arrive too; again you feel totally exploited. OUR EXPERIENCE: So for us the trip to Big Sister just cost 500SR for landing fees and Praslin which is 30 mins was 80 Euros each each way. The La Digue trip which is twice a week is complementary. We were the only people on the Praslin run so I can’t complain about 320 Euros for an hour’s boat use. Btw we got a taxi on Praslin organized by Karen with a local taxi driver named Colin. For 1600 SR he took as around from 10.30 to 3, waited for us for lunch and was a great guide. 3. The food is overall good, but are you really going to enjoy a $50 tikka masala ? The wine has been marked up around 8-10 times as well making an entry level ‘good’ wine cost hundreds of dollars. OUR EXPERIENCE: All depends where you live. We live in the South of France and spend time in London and San Francisco. Tikki Masala can cost $40 in a good restaurant in London or the South of France and this was no more expensive. A bottle of Veuve Cliquot was 150 Euros, about 4 times what is is in the Supermarket in the South of France. Could easily be the same price in a restaurant there. 4. Service overall - the service at the restaurants is quite "rigid". Waiters seem very stuffy, dry, and disinterested. The servers don't take time to engage guests; this was very apparent when the same waiter didn't even remember our room number during our stay. OUR EXPERIENCE: Not our experience at all. They remember the quirks that we liked and went out of their say. For example, we found the standard cocktail glasses a bit small (the drinks can overflow). After one request, all drinks came in larger glasses. 5. Food - I made a request for a simple pizza and this was denied. Not too hard to make! OUR EXPERIENCE: We didn’t order a pizza but every other request was met. I can only assume that some ingredients are hard to get or keep fresh 6. Diving Center - there is no diving center and Zil Payson does not offer snorkeling excursions. The only thing that they offer is a private boat charter! This seems like the first thing a beach resort should add. Further, if you do decide you want to charter the boat, you can't specify where you want the boat to go. OUR EXPERIENCE: They offer guided snorkeling every day. We found no need to charter a boat as the resort had boat trips every weekday somewhere. 7. Apart from that the rest of the management needs a Wake up Call have seen one only in the 4 days that we are here. OUR EXPERIENCE: We were met by Bruce on arrival, met again when we came back from Big Sister and Praslin and saw Bruce and or Hilton at least two other times when eating at the restaurants. Not an issue. 8. Dont depend on Six Senses Zil Pasyon for organising any excursions as you will be taken for a ride today we went to Praslin Island and they wanted Euro 500 for 20 minute boat ride…OUR EXPERIENCE: Again, they run a ride to Praslin on Thusdays. Its 80 each way per person For those prior reviewers, I can’t tell if your experience was a one off, but thought it would be helpful to others to address that many of these issues appear to have been addressed. The resort is two years old, so some maybe just learning lessons for them. Overall assessment. We loved the Seychelles and love the resort. Our other favorite spot for sun is St Barths. Zil Pasyon is a low key version. Simplier but very well done. SBH has more nightlife and better beaches (at least compared to Felecite Island itself) but both are great places to go in their own right.
