Arguably the world's most loved party, Rio Carnival offers a frenetic fusion of music, dance and kaleidoscopic colour.

Each year, more than 500,000 visitors descend onto Rio's streets to dance to hip-shaking samba and frevo music that blasts throughout the city. Dating back to 1723, the carnival is held before Lent each year with the Winner's Parade occuring on the Saturday after the carnival draws to a close.

The highlight of the carnival is undoubtedly the samba school parade: an imaginative, colourful and elaborate parade illustrating floats and bright costumes from local schools.

While Rio Carnival might be the most popular, Salvador is actually home to the biggest festival in Brazil. This week-long party sees dancers, samba music and street vendors create a riot of colour and life during the vibrant parades that flow through Pelourinho, Campo Grande and Barra.

Visit Rio de Janeiro during festival season and get into the party spirit for a trip like no other.
