Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca

We love talking holidays and we're here to help. If you'd like our advice on how to create an amazing Puno holiday, just give our Destination Specialists a call.

Nestled amid the snow-draped Andes, Lake Titicaca’s famous floating islands have been built from reeds by the indigenous lake dwellers, a sight that must not be missed on your South American adventure.

Made entirely by bouyant totora reeds that grow in the lake's shallows, the local Uros people don't just build their islands from the reeds; they build their homes and boats from them too. With some island's boasting elaborate features, such as archways and even children's swing sets, it's a sight to behold. Home to around 2,000 Uros, who claim themselves as the 'owner of the lake', you can take a boat trip to these magical islands and watch the descendents of the ancient Uros tribe weaving their habitat first hand.
