Comfortable, but expected more.

Macau, China

Me and my wife were a bit confused where to stay in the Phillipines. Bohol looked good and interesting, and Amarela seemed to be a fair option regarding price and style of accomodation, as we usually prefer to stay in boutique hotels. The staff picked us up at the ferry, and in less than one hour we were at the hotel. It is a quaint small hotel, cozy, and the common areas area nice. The rooms are a bit old fashioned, and in-need of some restyling. It is one of the oldest hotels in Panglao, you can tell that the styling match the age. The beach of the hotel is quite good, and I must say, probably one of the best in the Island. But bare in mind they have a lot of sea urchins, so, use some special shoes. We bought 2 pairs in a shop somewhere in the island, so don't worry if you forget yours. The breakfast was Ok, but because at the time, not much guests, they change the breakfast from buffet, to a-la-carte. I'm ok with the change, but you need to tell guest before hand. We also had a few lunches by the beach, and the food was quite yummy. The staff was very friendly, and usually ready to help and always greeting us with a smile. Location wise was good. 10m from Alona Beach, and 45m to the ferry. Just a hint: Alona Beach is ok to have dinner, or even a late lunch, but not good for sunbath or playing in the water. Don't bother. We rent a scooter and drove into Bohol Island, Zip Line, Japanese Road and Chocolate Hills. It is quite a stunning drive, but exhausting (1h20m each way), specially under heavy rain! The scooter was also practical to go to Alona beach for dinner, or even beach hoping during the day. Overall, It was a good stay. I believe that the hotel needs to improve the rooms, keeping the quaint style, but making it more nice and detailed. Staff was good, polite and joyful. Location also ok. The price was a bit much for what you get, but still fair, compared to what you usually find in the Philippines.
