Shangri-La's 5-star oasis for families

Meaning "The Oasis" in Arabic, Al Waha hotel is the largest and most family-friendly of the three environments that make up Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa. Overlooking the Gulf of Oman, it has glorious pool facilities fringed with palms and a pool bar which sits adjacent to a dedicated kids' pool. You can explore dining across the resort — with inspiring beachfront Omani cuisine, Asian delicacies and extravagent buffets to try — and between meals you can go over or under the ocean with kayaking or diving, have some family fun at Adventure Zone, or unwind on the 500-metre lazy river that runs between Al Waha and Al Bandar next door.

  • Ocean view family suites with Playstations
  • Plenty of dining choice across the resort
  • Kids' club and family zones to explore
  • One of Oman's premier family hotels
  • CHI The Spa for ultimate service and relaxation

Of the three Shangri-La resorts in Muscat, this one is best for families. It is Oman's first resort dedicated to families, I visited here on my own holiday and my kids especially loved the lazy river, stretching over half a kilometre!

Loved the baby turtles

Surrey

We went to the resort 12-19 May and got a really great deal. We paid £550 for 7 nights in the resort due to Ramadan beginning during our holiday. This is less than half the usual rate. The rooms are a little dated. But the bathrooms are big and clean, and the housekeeping do a great job of keeping the rooms clean. They don’t tell you this: but you get water for free. This is a great selling feature as it’s HOT!!! As soon as you arrive around the pool/ beach the lovely staff bring a cool box with water. It’s really great. We arrived at 8am and were fortunate to get an early check in which we appreciated. Twice while we were there we were fortunate enough to see baby turtles released on the beach. Such a special experience! There are many nests on the beach itself. During our trip the bars and restaurants started to close up due to the holy month- but before Ramadan actually started. Once it starts you are unable to buy alcohol. We did bring some with us from the airport though which I would recommend as it’s £15 a glass of wine (small). The breakfasts are lovely- broad offer and well stocked. The food generally is very expensive. We didn’t eat the buffet (£50pp) - and stuck to a la Carter instead which worked out cheaper. But meals are not worth the money. All in all we had a lovely trip. I wouldn’t recommend the hotel for couples- there are loads of kids running around and being noisy at meal times. But they do say this is a family resort. I wouldn’t say the rooms are 5 star, but the resort is pleasant. Loved the lazy river. Wish we were back here now.

Family luxury setting

Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom

My family visited this hotel back in August and it was our most successful holiday ever. It was our first time flying long haul with our two boys aged 10 & 11. We flew with BA and quite frankly it was a pleasure compared to budget airlines. Our welcome at the airport set the scene for the whole trip, the Omani people are wonderfully. Our transfer by Travco was a mini tour in it self, with our polite driver telling us much about his county and pointing out places of interest. The drive entering the hotel complex will take your breath away, it truly is a location vacation. Reception were efficient and our room was ready for us at our early morning arrival. It made for a wonderful start to our holiday. We had a one bedroom suite which was lovely. Loads of space, beautiful views across the sea and a complimentary mini bar. We visited in low season and that suited us. We did not find coping with the heat a problem and we liked the fact the resort was quite quiet. It did get very busy at weekends but the beach/ pool attendant always had sun beds ready for us every morning. The restaurant food was superb. In Samba Restaurant Juan the head chef was wonderful. My Son has a milk allergy and every night he would accompiany us around the buffet telling us what he could or could not eat. He also made special deserts for him every night. He went above and beyond the service you would expect, and was such a nice man too. My only criticism of the restaurant is the number of parents who think it is acceptable for their children to have iPads at the table with the volume up for all to hear. It is very expensive to eat at the hotel, and the iPad situation does not add to the ambience expected for a five star hotel. Staff really should put that to a stop. Listening to Fireman Sams Siren on some game a child was playing all through my dinner is not what I had in mind. Facilities for children are exceptional at the hotel and it is still a sophisticated environment for adults. There was no entertainment in the evening, but we were happy to have a stroll after dinner. It was very serene. We are returning to the hotel in August to celebrate my Husbands 50th Birthday and our 20th Wedding Anniversary. My Children wouldn't hear if going anywhere else. The location and facilities really are perfect and Oman is an amazing country. We visited Muscat and the Souk, which is a must. This year we plan to get out and about more. All the staff in the hotel were excellent. We literally can't wait to return in August.
