Shongololo Express - Dune Express: East bound

Discover Africa by Rail

We love talking holidays and we're here to help. If you'd like our advice on how to create an amazing Namibia holiday, just give our Destination Specialists a call.

When the indigenous people of the southern continent observed the first trains in Africa, the lines of rolling stock passing on the distant horizons recalled the profile and sinuous movement of a creature they called Shongololo, meaning ‘millipede’.

Recently purchased by Rovos Rail, the Shongololo Express is a First Class experience from Rovos who have an enviable reputation in delivering excellent service and attention to detail. Travelling comfortably and securely during the night, Shongololo Express trains save guests precious holiday time, arriving each dawn at a new destination.

Professional multi lingual guides are ready to take guests on inclusive scheduled excursions. Their experience and wealth of knowledge assist passengers to gain the most from each day's programme. The journey is all about the destinations and excursions with less emphasis on the train experience though this does not lessen the comfort and style. Meal times do not require a dress code and lunches are not included as these can be purchased on the excursion that day.

Guests are accommodated in smart en-suite cabins with double or twin beds with two historically appointed dining cars setting the scene for meals. Modern and traditional local cuisine is on offer with a selection of distinguished South African wines available. Guests can also relax in the bar car, small smoking lounge or the observation car with an open-air balcony situated at the back of the train.
