Elephanta Island

Labyrinth of cave temples

Nestled on the interior of this thickly wooded island are the famous Elephanta Caves. The historic cave temples include five Hindu caves with stone sculptures representing the god Shiva, as well as two Buddhist caves. Boats leave every half hour from the wharf beside the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island. The half-hour journey is worth it for the seascapes alone, offering sweeping views across Mumbai's magnificent coastline.
