The southern African nation of Mozambique has a long coastline in the Indian Ocean.  With a beautiful, clear warm ocean and superb diving and snorkelling opportunities, there’s plenty to tempt you into the waters in Mozambique.  The area is dotted with beaches like Tofo, a hot spot for diving with manta rays, whale sharks and humpback whales.   There are offshore marine parks and in the Quirimbas Archipelago, there’s a 250 kilometre stretch of coral islands to explore. If you want to see whale sharks, then Tofo is one of the hot spots to head for, where you can also dive with manta rays as well as spot whale sharks and humpback whales. The mangrove-covered Ibo Island has colonial-era ruins, plus it’s another great diving and snorkelling destination. Bazaruto Archipelago farther south has reefs which protect its rare marine life, which includes dugongs.  The dugong is a medium-sized marine mammal, related to manatees and similar in both appearance and behaviour. It is also related to the elephant but not at all similar. They graze on underwater grasses, searching with their bristly snouts.  It’s believed that ancient seafaring tales of mermaids and sirens were inspired by sightings of these unusual mammals.
