It was even better than expected

Worcester, United Kingdom

When you have high expectations you normally line yourself up for disappointment. As we drove through the Atlas mountains towards KT, I was brewing for a fall. And then when we arrived I was a tad disappointed. I had expected to see the Kasbah in all its glory from afar, and to twinkle with excitement. But it's on the same level as the road so there is no awe-inspiring arrival. As we walked in, everyone was friendly and the place was obviously beautifully maintained and the staff super friendly. My immediate response, as we sat overlooking the pool having the hotel explained to us, was trepidation. The other hotel guests looked super glamorous and I suffered a massive pang of imposter syndrome. But I was so wrong. This place is immaculately kept and everything has been thought of but it is not remotely snooty. The staff I was utterly smitten by. They started off formal and distant but soon realised that we loved interaction and softened in response. A particular highlight, which we sadly didn't get until our last night, was a basic lesson in Berber from our waiter. Howla Sharaam Afak! Lots of wine please! I can highly recommend the daily walks. We went on our first day and had a relatively gentle walk at low level and went to a berber house for us to have a look around. Having just had breakfast it was a bit of a surprise to then be offered a tableau of olives, breads, tahini like puree, etc when you simply didn't have the appetite. They also offered mint tea. I prefer it without sugar but others found that bitter, the tradition is to have it richly sweetened. But the best thing of all was chatting to the other guests. They were so interesting and so varied and it was reassuring to find they weren't all terrifying. We also joined a yoga class, went to the gym and swam a lot. But the joy was that you didn't need to do anything, but it was there for you if you wanted. As parents and both with our own businesses that we run, the luxury of being able to do what you want, when you want was fabulous. The food was fantastic. We tended to opt for the moroccan food for the fun of trying things from other cultures and it was delicious every time. The joy was finding the fish to be so good. As a nutritional therapist I can be difficult to feed as my husband and I don't eat gluten, predominantly because of my husband's rheumatoid arthritis. They have a different way of describing gluten, in that they label things that contain gluten rather than highlighting the gluten free foods. I found it easy to navigate the foods as the menu was well designed. The starters were particularly delicious and appealing. The only downside was on a few occasions when we first arrived I think a bit was lost in translation, leaving us to believe the food offered was gluten free, only then to be told later, after my husband had eaten it, that it wasn't gluten free. I don't see this as a fault, rather than a miscommunication. We loved that the staff were almost exclusively recruited locally. The unspoken appreciation of Richard Branson amongst the staff and the locals was very apparent. There is a phenomenal Berber shop at the end of the grounds and we only went there on the last afternoon to buy something for our son. It was like a treasure trove. Having come from Marrakech where bargaining was the name of the game, we didn't know whether we should have done at this shop. As a result, we came away having paid FAR more for something than we felt we should. In contrast, the boutique within the hotel was fairly priced and we wouldn't have considered bartering there. All in all, this was one of our best holidays ever and I simply cannot wait to return, even though the memories will last forever.

A gem of a resort hidden in the Atlas Mountains

Atlanta, Georgia

We heard about this place just a few weeks before our trip, and had not yet finalized all our lodging. Good thing too, since we were able to book one night in our 8 day Morocco trip. The grounds are simply spectacular, expansive, with many thoughtful touches, and offering breath taking views. On arrival around 12.30pm, we were offered a welcome drink, we both had wine. Then while waiting for room to be ready, enjoyed a light but delicious lunch on the patio over looking the pool. Then we checked into our room, and explored the grounds. There is much to see just in terms of the decor and art pieces. Other reviews mention the collection being random and not thoughtful, well, maybe they had not fully read up on the history of how Richard Branson took over the property, as well as the art collection of the previous owner. The dinner and breakfast were fine, if not amazing (but certainly the ambience made up big time). The mule shed with its animal collection, the few resident peacocks and other natural fixtures make for a very natural sensation. The Berber Gift shop was also delightful to visit. No stay here would be complete without a cup of tea in the courtyard. We would love to stay here for at least 2-3 days on our next visit, 1 day was simply not enough.
