Deserving of its accolades!

Arlington, Massachusetts

My husband and I were traveling for our first vacation without child in tow and decided on the Riviera Maya as a destination. We were looking for a resort outside of the cities of Cancun and Playa del Carmen that was easily accessible, adults only, and all-inclusive. From online information along with a majority excellent reviews, Unico 20.87 Hotel Rivera Maya seemed to check all the boxes. We had some reservations before going due to recent TripAdvisor reviews regarding corporate events as well as noise around the main pool area, but we were committed and continued forward with our reservation and our vacation. We're so glad we did! While there was a large group there during our stay, this never disrupted our visit in a meaningful way. * Accomodations We booked the Alcoba Ocean Front room with a single king-size bed. We requested a room at a higher floor for both privacy and quiet and had a room on the 4th floor. We were in Building 1 which is further from resort amenities and had its own beach access, so worth a request. The room itself is spacious and met the expectations from photos we viewed online. While we know that requests aren't a guarantee, we felt like they had made an effort to honor them. The balcony gives a great view of the mangroves, beach, and beautiful ocean. We also loved listening to all the tropical birds outside our room. A sizeable jetted, soaker tub is available on the balcony for relaxation. The tub is, technically, not 100% private from eyes as there is visibility from certain balconies and further eyes on the beach, but this can be remedied by more modest people with the use of one of the room robes or towels, or using at night. We used the soaker tub multiple times throughout our stay. The king-size bed is middle-of-the-road in terms of softness/firmness and suited us fine as we had good nights of rest each night of our stay. The linens were a great temperature for the climate. If desired, a large flat-screen television is present in-room which can be used to watch both Spanish and English-based channels, Netflix, or even Youtube. A 2-drawer dresser is present to store clothing as well as a larger clothes closet which can be used to hang clothes. I would have liked to see a little bit more dresser space, but it's a minor nitpick. The minbar was always restocked. The bathroom has a double his-and-hers vanity and spacious stand-alone shower that can be switched between a handle-based and waterfall-based shower head. Water temperature and pressure was great and important as we found we took more showers than normal due to the heat and a lot of fun time swimming in the ocean and pool. Housekeeping was very nice and came twice per day -- Once during the late morning to early afternoon to tidy up the room, clean the linens, as well as provide fresh towels and once during the evening hours (usually during dinner) to provide an additional turn-down service along with surprising extras! We felt spoiled! Finally, the entire resort is impeccably clean. Never did we encounter a leaky faucet, sandy floor, or scummy pool. Given its size and range of facilities, reflects highly on their devoted staff. I'm not sure exactly how they do it, but Bravo! * Pools There are two main pool areas and a small quiet pool. The first pool area takes up the central area of the resort and is actual made up of several pools. The main central pool had a swim-up bar, stationary water bicycles, water basketball, and water volleyball court setups. A DJ is setup by the pool and plays music via the various speakers setup in the area. We had read reviews about the noise-level of the music, but I think these complaints are nitpicky. It is true that taste in music can differ, but I would label the music as loungy dance music to chill out to - not booming house music. It was only unacceptably loud if you parked yourself at a pool lounge chair directly next to a speaker which is easily remedied by moving to another lounge chair that is not directly next to a speaker. One of the highlights of our pool time was when a saxophone player performed at the main pool area - providing improvisational playing along with the DJ's mixing - pretty cool! It is also worth noting there is an perched infinity pool area which has reservable cabanas for larger groups and a few lounge chairs as well for general use. The infinity pool was less busy than the main pool area and one of our favorite areas to take a cool dip. We would often just relax at the edge of the infinity pool, sip our drinks, and stare at the mangroves and ocean. For guests who wanted a more secluded experience, the 'quiet pool' is available on the far end of the 20.87 restaurant. We found the 'quiet pool' nice for a more 'zen-like' experience for relaxation or reading a book by the pool. The quiet pool area also has a swim-up bar and a hot tub area. It was pleasant, but after a while, it felt too still for us - to each their own. Pool waiters work hard and constantly go around providing assistance with lounge chairs, umbrellas, food, and drink. They were attentive to whenever we ran out of a cool drink. Our favorite drinks were classic margaritas, the miami vice frozen drink, tonic water with lime, or mineral water. * Beach Prior to our trip, I had read reviews about issues with seaweed in the area (sargassum) and the rockiness of the beach. At the time we visited, the seaweed was a major issue along the coast, but a minor one at Unico. Machines went out early in the morning clearing the sargassum on the beach as well as any that had collected in the shallow waters. We took several beach walks and noted the sargassum was much worse at neighboring resorts, so credit has to be given to the Unico staff for managing their section of beach as we considered it a non-issue. In terms of rockiness, the beach, for the most part, is powdery sand. There are a few rocky areas but they are uncommon and easily avoidable - that's nature. The ocean water was a refreshing release from the sun's heat and very comfortable in temperature (~78-80 F / ~25.5-26.5 C). I actually made a morning habit of taking a run on the beach, followed by a refreshing dip in the ocean, then using their outdoor shower to relax my muscles in the pool (which I had pretty much to myself, and that was at around 9am). There wasn't a "competitive towel reserving" crowd, at least until much later in the day. The staff is also good about picking up towels of guests who leave, which keeps the chairs available. The beach is less crowded than the pool area which makes it another ideal place for relaxation, swimming, or even an exercising. We also spotted many schools of shallow-water fish and even some mantarays so it definitely can be a destination for some simple, low-stakes snorkeling if desired. * Food Neither of us are particularly "buffet" people, but Unico does a great job here! The breakfast and lunch choices were ample, varied, and rotated daily. We enjoyed trying some traditional dishes, as well as the fresh fuit and vegetarian options. The restaurants all have their high points. Our favorite all-around was Cueva Sieta (ask for the Margarita cart and the Mayan coffee). The appetizers overall were often more impressive than the entrees, and towards the end of the trip, we found ourselves craving simple salads and sandwiches at the Cafe Inez. I'd rate the food as better than a cruise, but not as fine as a high-end urban restaurant (we're coming from Boston). But no major complaints given the price point and generosity of what is offered. * Inclusions When we booked Unico, we thought we'd take advantage of the built in excursions, but after booking a private tour and realizing that the cenotes were an easy collectivo away, we ended up touring local sites and snorkeling on our own. We did use the spa inclusions for four treatments, including the Agave for One, the Relaxing Massage, the Hot Stone Massage, and the Escencia two-person massage. All were very relaxing and comparable in quality to treatments we've received in US. The hydrotherapy treatment beforehand is a bit of a novel experience, and I'll leave future guests to experience it for themselves. * Personel / Extras We wrote to Unico staff several times prior to our visit to ask questions and make requests, and for the most part, their responses were all helpful and reflected in our experience. The hotel has an ample amount of staff. My husband commented that, many times, he felt he noticed noticeably more staff working at the resort than guests. The staff were very friendly and hard working. While it's an all inclusive, we went out of our way to tip the staff members for a job well done. I'd invite anyone to do the same! The lobby and concierge staff were helpful in terms of providing information and assistance. One could tell that many of the front-lobby staff as well as localhosts had previous training and education in hotel hospitality and tourism. If you are in need of currency, the front lobby also had a Santander bank ATM with comparable exchange rates to those we saw in many other locations (airport and in the center of Playa del Carmen). The outdoor handlers were also helpful to us navigate the process of hailing a colectivo (which is not as difficult as we anticipated) and a simple way to get around the area if you don't have a tour or car rental. They also can help you call a taxi if you want your own ride or shuttle. Our localhost, Emilia, deserves a specific honorable mention. I mentioned that our trip was for my husband's 40th birthday. Each night, it seemed, Emilia gave us a special treat at our room - champagne, mixed drinks, running of a warm balcony bath with rose petals and additional champagne, and our favorite - a gift bag and birthday-song video presentation on our final night at the resort. These types of personal touches helped make our stay feel more special. Overall, we had a marvelous time at Unico and consider it to be one of our most memorable vacation destinations and experiences - highly recommended.

Accommodations, pools, food and service are tops, beach is not

Ottawa, Canada

This is high end for sure. Beautiful property and the rooms are incredible and well appointed. Very comfortable beds and linen. Bathrooms are a very comfortable size, with large shower and separate toilet area. The patios are great for watching the sunset or for a morning coffee on a comfortable day bed. Complimentary slippers and sun hats were a nice touch. The food and beverage quality was excellent. Great restaurant choices as well as buffet selection. The Mexican restaurant has excellent traditional and infused options. The Italian restaurant was my favourite, great quality appetizers and the seafood pasta was the best. My friend Alex loved the prosciutto pizza appetizer and the penne arrabiata. Liquor, beer and mixed drink selection had a wide variety and higher end stuff to choose from. Staff was always around and happy to look after you in the pool areas for drinks and snacks. The pools have a great layout to lounge around and to spend time in. They aren't deep enough to dive but you can float or swim around to cool off and they make it easy to spend the whole day in. I believe there are 4 pool areas to choose from. There is also pool volleyball, basketball and exercise programs available. The only drawback with this resort and why I can't go 5 stars is the beach, which is why I believe the pool areas were laid out so well. It is a narrow beach and there are submerged rocks as well as lots of seaweed/grass floating around and in piles on the beach. I was warned by my concierge that there was rocks and to keep to the left. However I was not far enough and I scraped my knee on a rock my first time out. You literally have to go to the far left of the property(looking at the ocean) to have a decent chance of not stepping on or encountering a rock in the waves. It was disappointing considering how nice the water and waves are and how beautiful the resort is. I realize this is the natural environment, but it was frustrating thinking twice about hitting the ocean. Overall I enjoyed this relaxing stay.
