Lovely staff, average hotel

London, United Kingdom

Returned to Secrets courtesy of an undertaking from Mr Guzman last year following a problem. Many thanks to him for honouring his word. We were happy to return and had the very nice room we were in last year. No problems with the room or facilities, all worked well and the garden view meant we could watch the birds which we love. The hotel is clearly run down which I suspect is an inheritance from the previous owner. Probably needs a shutdown and pretty hefty investment to bring it up to the required standard. Lovely area of the island so might well be worth the resources and effort. Realistically the snorkelling off the beach is limited and the risks to health from the dive boat engines and the jet skis from neighbouring facilities are an issue for me. Equally there are some decent wildlife to view, I saw scorpion fish, Queen and French angels, variety of barracuda, lots of rays, one huge trunkfish, peacock flounders and a pair of pretty big permit fish. One lobster. Seems the issue over using the jetty has been resolved, that’s sensible and we used Dive Palancar. Lobo was the dive master and was a good guy, really motivated and helpful. Staff at the dive / snorkeling counter by the Preferred area were also helpful. In passing, an American man thought it entertaining to take a starfish out of the water to impress the females. Clearly there needs to be more beach notices to tell tourists about the rules of a national park and penalties. Then impose the rules. Staff will have difficulty telling tourists - convinced of their own importance - how to behave. Luis at the dive counter was supportive of this man being tackled by Sandra. We despair at the ignorance of some people. Beach notices required and reminders in rooms please. Food is pretty variable. We ate at El Patio, Gohan and mostly Bordeaux. Portions are pretty tiny but that mostly suits us but we met people who were eating in several places each night and then room service. We like Bordeaux because the staff are a credit to the hotel. The house red wine, a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon is very drinkable too. We would like to mention Luis Alfredo (the Capitan) a real star and does more than his fair share of the work; Meseros: Francisco, Reyes, Gaudencio, Angel, Santos and Dolores the hostess. A very good team of staff, we really liked eating there for the staff rather than the food. We used the Market for breakfast and as a diabetic on low carb regime my food choices were somewhat limited. Mexico just does not do low carb, no sugar! However staff produced avocado on request bless them and allowed me to take sausages and cheese out of the restaurant so I could have a snack lunch. Appreciated. Coco staff are helpful and happy to provide milk in paper cups for tea drinkers! Not a cafe for anyone on a diet or with diabetes. We had complimentary access to the hydrotherapy suite, thank you and things seemed better maintained this year. However, the steam room seemed to have problems getting to a decent heat which was frustrating. The spa is generally overpriced and I was quoted a ridiculous sum for the foot spa so that was business lost. Silly really. We know lots of people get $$ vouchers for listening to the holiday reps spiel but for us it’s holiday time lost listening to something which is pretty irrelevant if you live in UK. Staff in the Preferred lounge are really helpful: Nelly, Gueide, Rudolpho, Elizabeth and Mauricio the bar tender. Apologies if we forgot anyone. Tickets on the posh bus to Merida were sorted by the staff and we were very grateful. Incidentally, this 3 day trip to Merida was the absolute highlight of our holiday. It took a while for housekeeping to realise we meant it when we requested please leave our room alone, we only require the minibar to be filled and bin emptied. I guess people want clean everything every day whilst on holiday. It’s ridiculous and a massive burden on any green credentials. We are collectively ridiculously wasteful and it’s not necessary, how grubby do I get when in and out of the water each day? We have seen comments in other reviews regarding the drainage smell. It’s strongly evident by block 5 of the Preferred area, as you walk between Secrets and Sunscape. I imagine the preferred pool is largely composed of human urine with a bit of water plus chemicals. People pitch up at 10am when the pool bar opens and some just don’t get out of the pool for hours. Hmmm. Silly season tends to erupt mid afternoon as the alcohol plus need to be seen and heard reaches a peak. Dreary but everyone has different ideas of a good holiday I guess. Nice if behaviour didn’t impact on others enjoyment... So...lots to enjoy. Staff are terrific. Facilities less impressive. Well placed on a nice beach. Easy trip into San Miguel by taxi if required. In passing, we always get local currency for travelling. Taxi to town is $15 or MXD200. Do the maths as they say. Money saved on taxis and other services paid in local currency can be passed on in tips. That’s how we like to do it. Thanks Mr Guzman and Nelly Baas and the staff.

Best entertainment team

Lincoln, Nebraska

Arbey, Leo and Sandra did an amazing job running daily activities for the guests. They would join in on the fun too! The food also tastes amazing. It is smaller portions, so I would end up ordering a couple of items. I would highly recommend the swim up hotel rooms. Great views at the hotel!
