Luxury in paradise

How can anyone not love this place? The attention to detail and the warm hospitality from staff is world class. For example, Devraj's warmth at the bar by the pool and his cocktails. He sourced soem agave syrup for me for a drink. At breakfast, there is loads of choice. Allow 2 hours ! Rahul even made me a chipati from scratch. Plenty of space around the beach and the pool. You will never need to fight for a sun bed here. Near the hotel there is the flaq market too for an injection of local life. This is a great hotel for celebrating something special and for a great holiday treat

Poor service and food lets it down

Leeds, United Kingdom

Given the number of rave reviews and its 5 star status we were left more than a little disappointed with the quality of the food and service. The main restaurant is focused on a buffet which is fine for breakfast but not dinner at a 5 star resort unless it was something special. I am afraid at the Saint Geran it was more like a 3 or 4 star all inclusive offering and it was the same each evening. If dining at the main restaurant ask for the A La Carte menu which is pretty good; albeit you will have a long wait. There are another two restaurants (which you need to book a few days in advance) which are better but I would still describe them as average. As regards the service, the staff were very courteous and friendly but lacked supervision and training. Examples were, wine being sent to the wrong table, wine poured into the wrong glass, bread not appearing, waiting 20 plus minutes to be served and food served without cutlery. Towards the end we just had to laugh and it is disappointing management have not sought to correct this given similar comments from other reviewers. Despite the above we still had a great holiday and there is a lot to commend the resort as: - rooms were a decent size - great dressing area in bathroom with decent lighting, hanging space and powerful hairdryer - good resort layout where nothing was a long walk - brilliant sports facilities with tennis courts, two gyms, water sports etc - beach is spread out with a couple of discrete areas so didn't feel over crowded One downside to the facilities are the pools; the adult pool is a series of ponds around the bar and main restaurant and it feels more suited to gold fish than swimming. The other pool at La Pointe is more one for a dip although it would be good for teaching young children to swim. The accommodation is well laid out with options of: - Lagoon rooms (quiet with large grassy area in front, least appealing view and doesn't get morning sun) - Ocean rooms (quiet and short walk to the beach in front which shelved quite steeply and was narrow) - Beachfront rooms (beach is right in front with the best beach areas) Other points to mention are: - There is a nightly show with music at the main bar and whilst not overly loud you can hear the music in the bedrooms that are nearby until about midnight - Felt they penny pinched for the prices charged with only one glass of water offered on the beach, sporadic fruit treats on the beach and charging for tonics (base G&T was 620 MUR (£15)) - The fogging for mozzies was haphazard; one chap fogging one bush in about ten - we were bitten! - We took the half board package and it is difficult to be precise on the value of it as the credits in the non-main restaurants varied by dish. We estimated it worked out at about 3,750 MUR per person (£90) Overall, we did have a good holiday despite the service and the food but as we felt short changed I doubt we will be back. It does make a great family resort and I can imagine it is a no go area for couples looking for a peaceful and relaxing time during school holidays.
