Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge

A peaceful natural retreat

An enchanting boutique resort in the flourishing hills above the coastal villages of Black River and La Gaulette on the south west of the island, Lakaz Chamarel Exclusive Lodge is a unique alternative to many larger resorts. Made up of just 20 individually decorated rooms and suites set amidst a beautiful natural site, its atmosphere is peaceful and calm with artfully bohemian style touches throughout. There is a restaurant and bar where you can enjoy some local delicacies including fresh grilled fish from the coast, and a spa nestled behind bamboo welcomes you to let go with a massage and sauna experience. Just 15 minutes by car from the favoured beaches of Morne and Baie du Cap, you needn't miss the sand, and this journey can also be made by bicycle — hired for free from the hotel.

Beautiful setting with LOTS of mosquitos

g_cook29

There’s no doubting that the setting is wonderful and great care/attention has been given to making the rooms/grounds well maintained. Also, we found the breakfast and dinner a real highlight. However. 1) The rooms do not have AC (necessary during hottest months). 2)The mosquito problem is really bad. At no point would you want to sit by the pool/bar due to the inevitability of being badly bitten. Most nights we ate quickly and retreated to our mosquito nets but still suffered 30+ bites in 3 days. 3)The rooms have a sound system only compatible with pre-2010 iPhones. 4)They charge for tap water! 5) Bar prices are astronomical compared to other hotels- not an issue as you’ll not want to risk the mosquitos. So, a mixed bag. If it’s a cooler time of year (re AC) and you own a bee suit (mosquitos) then the food and settings are excellent and worth the stay.

Superb

Lincolnshire, England

Wow – this is just a brilliant place to stay if you like privacy, tranquillity, beautiful views, wild life and great food. Best of all, there was only one TV on the whole site, in the communal lounge - so no news about Brexit. If you like big fancy large 5* hotels with every modern aid at your fingertips (or nearby) then this may not be your cup of tea as it is a rather different experience. The main difference being, you get a lodge in the palatial grounds, rather than a room in a block. We were allocated Namaste overlooking one of the pools with most modern conveniences including Wifi and rather exhilarating outdoor shower. We stopped here at the end of October for four nights as part of a two resort stay in Mauritius - loving every minute of it. I regretted not booking more nights because it was so good and just suited us down to the ground. The wonderful attentive staff, the restaurant that turned out delights every morning & evening, the endless beautiful gardens and the views at the top of the site that are just to die for. We were initially, rather envious of the people that had booked the lodges up there, with those views but that said there was a rather long walk to the restaurant – not so easy at night. All the lodges have nice outlooks, so all in all we were well happy with ours. Our problem staying here for such a short stay was that it was so gorgeous around the grounds that we just wanted to take it all in and relax, and this is something that is rather easy to do at Lakaz. Unfortunately, that was at the cost of not then going to all the interesting places nearby which other holidaymakers told us about. Being a tropical region, there is a bit of an issue with insects and some reports/reviews say they are lots of mosquitos but I tended to reason, it was more down to the tiny ants. That said armed with a strong deterrent spray and the staff treating the grounds regularly, seemed to keep the issue at bay. The bird life, flowers, trees, croaking frogs and fruit bats are just fascinating to see and listen to. These features pressed all the right buttons for us, as we absolutely loved the place, so we were rather sad to leave. If I ever visited Mauritius again, I would without doubt visit this complex again. Thank you François and your team for looking after us so well and making our holiday so memorable.
