Beautiful, Serene and Elegant

I spent three weeks in Mauritius in October and stayed for most of the holiday at Le Prince Maurice which is on the east side of the island. I know the island well - in fact I know most of the Indian Ocean pretty well - and there is absolutely no doubt that Le Prince Maurice is one of the very best hotels that I have stayed in. I can't say categorically that it is THE best because it simply depends on what your personal preferences are. If, for example, you want to do lots of sea swimming then this is not the hotel for you because, while the beach itself is lovely, the sea is mostly shallow and rather muddy underfoot (it is on the edge of a mangrove lagoon). And you don't get that wonderful turquoise and azure lagoon effect immediately off the beach, which you do at many of the Mauritian hotels. Don't get me wrong however .... it is still an extraordinarily pretty seascape but just not great for sea swimming. Now, you wouldn't necessarily find this out from the brochures or the websites (why would they tell you?) before you booked but, fortunately, I booked through Susie Freeman Travel and they evidently know more about Mauritius and the Indian Ocean generally than any other tour operator I have used in the past. And that makes such a difference because you know precisely what you are buying when you book the holiday; in fact, the investigation / discussion / booking process was a bit like test driving a car before you buy it. So, my first definitive advice is to book through Susie Freeman Travel - their prices also compared very favourably with the online booking options that I looked at. The hotel itself is fabulous. I think it's the most beautiful of all the Mauritian great hotels - very serene, tranquil and stylish with lots of marble and tinkling water but very tastefully designed. We had a stilts villa with eye-catching views over the mangrove lagoon with the backdrop of the undulating sugar cane fields and the craggy volcanic mountains in the background - it was stunning, particularly in the evening with the sun setting behind - and it was very private. In fact, Le Prince Maurice is a fairly large property and not that many rooms, under 80 I think, so the whole hotel feels very secluded and rather privileged, almost as if you are staying in a rather grand private residence. I guess you would describe the rooms as colonial, plantation style with highly polished dark mahogany floors, wooden furnishings and open ceilings right up to the rafters, which I imagine would help to dissipate the heat when it gets really warm. The bed was extremely comfortable and the rooms are equipped with everything you would expect at this exalted level of luxury. Storage was good and well laid out and the bathroom was large, although I felt that the bathroom fittings were beginning to look marginally dated. The food generally was excellent - to my mind, the Asian restaurant was probably the best - but all the restaurants were very impressive. One of the best things about this hotel is the golf because you have two 18 hole championship golf courses on tap and free, including a buggy, whenever you want to play. I played with friends quite a bit, usually on the Links course which is more forgiving than the Legends course which is where the Mauritian Open is played (its on the senior European Pro tour so this is proper golf!). The golf courses are truly fantastic; they are pretty, beautifully maintained and the people who run them are absolutely delightful - always friendly and welcoming and positive and nothing is too much trouble to make your round as enjoyable as it possibly can be. Frankly, if you want to play golf then try here in this hotel because the combination of the hotel and the golf is as good as it gets pretty much anywhere in the world .... although, ironically, I certainly wouldn't describe this as a golf hotel. Overall, I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. Its beautiful, serene and elegant and it positively exudes class. The staff are absolutely brilliant and, if you haven't been to Mauritius before, you will be amazed at the quality of service and how delightfully friendly and welcoming the whole place is. And the final point I would make is that, in October at least, it was incredibly good value compared to other top end hot destinations elsewhere in the world.

Best in the World with SFT

I stayed at The Prince Marice in the beginning of October with the whole family. Knowing the island well and international luxury hotels around the world through work meant I had high standards, yet this has got to be right up there with the very best. I booked my holiday through Susie Freeman Travel who really knows the island, having been in the business for over 20 years. She knew what we were looking for after one lovely conversation. It's the small touches that make the difference. Wifi in the transfer to the hotel to check in with loved ones (wifi name: Susie Freeman Travel in the car was so cool)!! To your favourite bottle of Gin in a beach bag waiting in your room as a welcome gift. The Prince Maurice boast a wonderful Spa and I highly recommend more than one visit. Ultimately the service quality, attention to detail, superb wine cellar and list with the location and stunning beach (basically everything) meant it was a dream holiday. I will be back, and I will be booking my holiday through Susie Freeman Travel. You should too!!
