Little piece of heaven

Swellendam, South Africa

We enjoyed 9 days at this amazing resort. We had the AI package and was able to have a great time without having additional cost from the resort. Our room was great, cleaning services daily and security was great. We enjoyed most of the activities from the resort and had lots of fun with archery, foot golf, snorkeling, glass bottom boat trip an exploring the other resorts around Awali. Do take the bikes from the activity centre, you can experience so much more at your own pace, we cycled to Le Morne and the mountain and this was one of our best days. Swimming with the Dolphins i would recommend for everyone, amazing experience i will always remember. Staff was always friendly and service good. We enjoyed all the food from the available restaurants and had no problems with anything (They even remembered which drinks we normally ordered and food allergies one of us in the group had!). Everything is explained on arrival and a short tour of the resort for your own orientation. The Spa is a must see, with a heated pool, sauna and steam rooms open to anyone and a complimentary massage upon arrival. This is a holiday and relaxation resort, you are literally on the beach with multiple pools or the ocean to swim in, walks along the beach and sunsets are breathtaking and should be done daily. This resort is truly a little piece of heaven and will make you forget about all your worries!

Shame

Derby, United Kingdom

We just spent two weeks on the standard AI package at this hotel, in August 2018. We've travelled extensively and had high expectations of this resort. Of course, it’s a beautiful location and we had lovely weather. Sadly, I don't know quite what the training consists of but the staff really let this place down. We were greeted by 'Bruno' who warned us in the manner of a Bond villain "I suggest you read the conditions very carefully". He proceeded to look at us as though we were something he'd trodden in whenever we saw him after that... This attitude was shared by the staff of the Italian restaurant, who quite unnecessarily queried the number of drinks we had taken in there with us. Its a shame that this level of attention was not given to simply providing courteous service. Many of the hotel staff came across as rude, sullen and sulky. What I first assumed to be slowness/laziness, I now believe to be part of the training: As it's AI, staff did not like it if you went to the bar to order a drink, you were expected to be waited on. However, if we hadn't gone up to the bar or approached staff directly, we'd still be waiting for our drinks now. It was not at all busy in terms of occupancy and there were times when staff were standing around appearing to do all within their power to avoid making eye contact. The food was ok, but samey, another area where the hotel could try harder to offer more variety. And it was a shame that, for an island, much of the seafood was a payable supplement. In terms of entertainment, the African-themed entertainment which we would have expected as standard was again payable as an expensive supplement once a week. The other so-called entertainment consisted of people strangling cats in the bar, quite late in the evening. Security... On at least 4 occasions we returned to our room after the daily 'clean' to find the back door had been left unlocked. Despite our raising this on at least two occasions with reception, it continued to happen. While I'm on the subject of 'clean', the bedlinen was not changed daily as stated in the literature. Again this was raised and again it made no difference. We knew it hadn't been changed, as we saw the same mysterious stains and tear on the bedcover the following night. On this subject, public toilets were in a poor state of repair, with soap dispensers falling off the walls. And of the 3 swimming pools, one was too cold to swim in, one appeared to be more decorative than functional and the supposedly heated family pool was also cold. It turned out that several of the pumps had not been working. The hotel shop was ridiculously expensive, around £13 for a pack of postcards, and the hotel sent out staff posing as beach sellers in an effort to get more money that way. I felt as though guests were seen as "rich and stupid" and was deeply disappointed at the CBA attitude. I will add at this point that the lovely Bruno never gave us the vouchers for the massages to which we were entitled and, when we asked about a courtesy room to shower after checkout, we were told we had to book a slot limited to half an hour! Although I believe in tipping good service at the end of a holiday, I had the distinct impression after talking to others, that we were expected to bribe in order to receive any kind of service. Yet we had already paid a considerable sum of money for what should have been a paradise vacation. Fortunately there was one shining light amongst the staff: Olivier, who worked long hard hours, overseeing the breakfast service before moving to Infinity Blue for the lunches... He was always smiling and was excellent at his job, attentive without being intrusive. He should be in charge of training all staff. Learn from us and save your money... Heritage Group: You let yourselves down.
