very convenient family hotel

cape town

My wife and I stayed at this hotel in October two years ago for our anniversary. The hotel lobby was five star but definitely not the rooms. It was not luxurious but the rest of the hotel made up for the shortfall in the room. the location and beach was good. The pool area was good, and the facilities for families were great. The beach was very good, better than most hotels in the area. Our overall stay was pleasant enough for me to want to return with my three kids. i would also take full board next time as the lunch that was served was quite a variety and my kids with varying tastes would all have been satisfied. We had a lovely dinner on the lake which i would highly recommend. What i liked best was all the activities and restaurants and what i liked least was the room. Definitely not luxury finishes but adequate for a beach holiday. In conclusion, I would return on a family vacation.

Lovely memories made on our honeymoon in Mauritius

Berkshire, United Kingdom

We picked The Ravenala after recommendation for its 10 restaurants as we are food orientated! We arrived about 2pm and were greeted by Elizabeth at the main reception who was really kind and welcoming. We were offered a drink and felt refreshed as we sat down and took in the beautiful views. We were taken to our rooms relatively quickly and our suitcases arrived promptly. The rooms are really spacious and really authentic looking. The beds are so comfy, massive, the air con is great but you don't always feel the need to have it on as there is a fan which also provides more than enough cool air. One downside to the rooms is the slight lack of clothes storage. I guess this is also to try and be in keeping with the authentic, rustic, uncluttered theme but would be nice to have a few more drawers. Our favourite restaurants were probably Kot Nu (traditional Mauritian food), Riviera and best was Lime. Kot Nu had a great feel to it and ultimately when you're in another country you want to sample the cuisine and they did this brilliantly. Riviera was our last night dinner and its has amazing fish dishes. Lime was the best for us. My husband was not keen on sushi but changed his mind after visiting Lime. Brilliant flavours and the kind of food you could happily eat all day long. Least favourite probably the Italian restaurant, simply because it was trying to be something it wasn't, nothing really achieved the typical Italian cuisine. I think ultimately this hotel need to stick to what they do best (apart from the Sushi which was amazing), because if you try to achieve lots of different world flavours sometimes it all gets a bit muddled. The breakfast in the morning we would described as being rather haphazard in that if you went at peak time which was typically about 09:30am it was rammed, you struggled to find a table which was newly laid or free for that matter. When you did get a seat it was fine, you can get fresh omelettes etc and everything is pleasant. I think the breakfast is served from about 07:30-10:00am. I think this could be at least extended until 10:30am as even that 30 mins might help alleviate the strain the staff would experience. I think they could do with having more water available. I often just went to the pool bar to get a bottle of water rather than get a small glass from the buffet that would mean several trips. One last thing about the food/restaurant which ultimately i'm not sure how it would be solved is, FLIES. They drive you pretty crazy- it starts at breakfast and its minimal and by lunchtime if you let your eyes wonder off your food or they would be on it in seconds. I've seen some other comments about flies on here and people complaining the management don't do anything to help the situation but i don't really see what they could do to be honest. The Mauritian street food and the O beach sandwiches are probably best for lunch. Kishan delivered the best service the entire holiday for us. You can tell he took so much pride in his work and he would literally bring you drinks without even asking for them in the end, once he knew your order. He is a credit to the hotel. Brilliant and a lovely person. Ragu was also great too but Kishan seemed to cover the stretch of beach we sat on more closely. Some of the other guests were actually extremely rude at times to several of the staff on the pool bar, beach bar etc and I found it amazing how the staff held their tongue and always remained courteous and kind. The gym was great, lovely and cool and the younger guys and girls working there were all really smiley and enthusiastic. They would encourage people to play volleyball on the beach and do a great job. We went to the spa on the second day for a couples sports massage. It was a lovely treatment and relaxing....although i hate to say but it wasn't a sports massage- I'm a sports massage therapist. Having said that i would reiterate it was a lovely treatment and the ladies really took care of us. I also had a manicure which was done perfectly. Couldn't fault it. We travelled with Virgin and met our rep on the 2nd day, we booked 2 excursions with her. One to the west with Dolswim (to visit dolphins and have a beach bbq on a beautiful tiny island). This was the highlight of the entire honeymoon. Our taxi driver was superb and so knowledgeable and told us so much history of the island- he took us to the location to board the speed boats. There's about 6 people per boat- you speed off and within 20 mins we were swimming with wild dolphins! Then the beach bbq was also brilliant. Altogether a great day and the two staff members on the boat were amazing. They clearly love their job. The other trip was to the south to visit Chamarel rum distillery, the 7 coloured sands and the Hindu temples. All brilliant activities again. I think the company was called Maurtour. Overall this was a once in a lifetime holiday and the perfect honeymoon- I think we really got to see the real Mauritius and glad we chose The Ravenala Hotel.
