Wow what a trip that was.

We arrived in Vilamendhoo about 10:00 in the morning after a long journey from Birmingham in the UK via Dubai with Emirates. Every thing fell into place we had a nice flight to Dubai on an Airbus A380 sat upstairs in twin seats and our connecting flight to Male was at 02:45am and we landed just before 8:00am. We got straight through immigration and our bags were quickly reclaimed and we were only 14 Kilos over the baggage allowance for the seaplane which was about $70. We soon got the bus to the Sea Plane terminal and sat in the air conditioned Crown and Champa terminal. Apparently we had just missed a flight to Vilamendhoo but 10 minutes later we taken to the seaplane and arrived in Vilamendhoo just after 09:30am. Antje quickly had us checked in and as our room was not ready (check out is 12:00 and rooms ready by 14:00) we were shown to the gym changing rooms and had a refreshing shower and changed into shorts and tee shirts and even better ditched our shoes. So nice to be barefoot for all of the holiday. we registered with Euro-Divers and got our repeaters discount and unpacked our gear ready for the checkout dive the next morning. Lunch was very nice and after a couple of beers our room was ready so we rested on our sunbeds in the shade next to the ocean. The next morning after breakfast we went to the dive center for the checkout dive, skills tested were mask clearance, buddy out of air, buoyancy and SMB deployment. We have each done over 1100 dives but still think it was worthwhile to revisit key skills. I will do more on the diving in a separate trip report on Euro-Divers. But we did see Manta Rays close up and Whalesharks. The Whaleshark day trip was brilliant. We saw a whaleshark close to Maamigili airport and snorkelled with it. We then did a dive and another whaleshark swam past us and the whaleshark that we snorkelled with snook up on us on our safety stop. Nobody saw him (Fernando) until he was just a couple of metres away from us. Our second dive was interesting with a few sharks, turtles until again another whaleshark found us at the safety stop. I had downloaded the Maldives Whaleshark Research App for my ipad and this identified the whaleshark from it's spots. Overall our stay at Vilamendhoo was brilliant we say baby blacktip and nurse sharksas well as juvenile stingrays from our sunbeds. Our Beach villa room was on the north of the island which we would recommend. It was also close to the swimming pool which was really quiet, we did half a mile in the pool everyday apart from those days were we had booked three dives on the boat. We ate in the Funama restaurant and the food was excellent, neither of us eat meat but do eat fish and veggie meals and we always had plenty of choice. The curries are very light but tasty and often based on tuna but also try the veggie curry it is really full of flavour. We did book the All Inclusive Plus package and found it a benefit, but didn't go mad as we dived everyday. We did get caught up in the Covid-19 scare when on our last full day a staff member returned to the island and let them know on arrival that he felt unwell. The government locked down the island with no-one or boats or planes allowed to visit or leave. Fortunately the staff member was tested negative the next day and the lock down was lifted. We had discussed our options with Antje and put back our departure by 48 hours, so we had two extra days on Vilamendhoo courtesy of the hotel. I did try calling emirates holidays in the UK from my mobile at £3.00 per minute but due to high call volume gave up after £18 with no answer. I down loaded Skype which worked with my VPN set to UK location at 2p per minute and 21p when talking to Emirates in Dubai.

A Great, More Affordable, Resort in the Maldives

marina del rey, ca

We stayed here for 5 nights in mid-March, just as the coronavirus outbreak was becoming a serious pandemic around the world. So the resort had far fewer guests than normal, and the 2 excursions we really wanted to do, to see the whale sharks and manta rays, were cancelled. BUT, we still had a wonderful stay at the resort. Here's how I'd summarize everything. This is a upper middle-tier resort. It's not a luxury 5 star location. BUT, the price is so much lower than many resorts in the Maldives, and Vilamendhoo had many wonderful aspects to it. First, the water villa we had, while not the fanciest, was perfectly nice, was clean as a whistle, had great AC, a wonderful indoor/outdoor open air bathroom and shower, and a lovely view with a great balcony with stairs right down to the water were we could snorkel right outside the villa. We did full board, as we aren't huge drinkers, and the food at the all you can eat buffets, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, was always somewhere between wonderful and amazing for each and every meal. We were never disappointed. We did a turtle viewing excursion, a snorkeling excursion, and an jet ski with snorkeling excursion. All were great. Especially the jet ski excursion was totally worth it. The guide took us to a great reef to snorkel for what seemed like forever. Then we went to a beautiful sandbar to take some pics. And then I got to drive the jet ski all the way back to the resort. A great couple of hours! Finally, i have to say, the house reef here, which is one of the reasons I chose Vilamendhoo, if absolutely fantastic. One of the best I've every experienced. More fish to see right at the resort than on any of the excursions. The only not completely positive thing I would have to say is that, unlike other similar type island resorts I've been too, not all the staff are of the super nice, warm and fuzzy types. I think some of this is due to a language barrier, and some just the Maldivian culture. Many of staff were great, including the young man who took care of us at all our meals, Reza, and some of the folks in the main reception area, but not all. Nevertheless, I would not let this deter you from choosing Vilamendhoo. I'm sure if we had been able to do the whale shark and manta ray excursions I would have even more wonderful things to say. In sum, I think this is a great resort, and a great choice, at a reasonable price for location where many of the resorts charge astronomical room rates.
