An enjoyable stay but beware of faux heritage promises ......

Cumbria, United Kingdom

As a retirement treat we thought we'd stay at the E&O for a couple of nights and stay in the Heritage Wing ...... we did get what we asked for, but I wish we hadn't asked! Don't misunderstand me. .. it certainly was heritage, but faux heritage. If you have grown up in the UK you certainly know what heritage is! Unfortunately, we got what you could call a cheaply furnished suite with what I would imagine a gentlemans' club room would feel like - atmosphere wise. All reproduction, utility dark furniture, or so it appeared. Very masculine and matter of fact ... as a female I just felt it very austere and lacked any kind of cosy comfort a hotel room should emit after you return from a busy day in a crowded Georgetown. Sorry, but you can have heritage and comfort, at least my Grandmother did!!!!!! Also, as it was off season, the restaurants and bars at the heritage side of the hotel were more or less empty. We had to walk from the heritage side of the hotel to the modern side to have breakfast and to use the infinity pool. I guess what I am saying is that we should have stayed in the modern part as the Heritage Wing just didn't cut the mustard old boy! However, The Planters Bar in the modern E&O was fabulous. Great breakfast selection, lovely ambiance, furniture and service. Happy hour was pretty darned good too!!!!!! The infinity pool was so relaxing with iced water delivered to you at regular intervals, a lovely touch. Service throughout our stay was wonderful. I guess what I am trying to say is that, if you visit this grand old lady, choose modern over fake heritage. Many people recognise true heritage and can be disappointed if it isn't delivered as the brochure promises. Still glad we stayed though as it is another adventure ticked off our bucked list......

Travel back in time

Darwin, Australia

We had a wonderful stay at this old colonial hotel whilst in Georgetown. The decor, service and restaurants were everything I would've imagined from the era. There is something quite decadent about a pianist playing in the foyer each afternoon. The hotel was within walking distance of all the key tourist destinations. We booked a suite in the heritage wing so had the luxury of space and fresh fruit daily, and the staff went over and above for our anniversary with rose petals and the little touches. Breakfast was a smorgesbord every day catering for every food preference you can imagine. Farquhar's Bar was the perfect place to pop in for an afternoon cocktail after a day of sight-seeing and dining at 1885 was by far the most exceptional dining experience. I recommend you order the Crepe Suzette! Special appreciation for the doormen in pith hats who couldn't have been more helpful during our stay. A great experience overall - we certainly will stay again!
