Inconsistency in Service

Singapore, Singapore

I have been advised by my friend in Penang to stay at the historical E&O. Stay 3 nights’ stay to celebrate grandma’s birthday that fell on the check-in day, which I highlighted in my booking. Stayed at the Victory Annexe suites as the Heritage Wing was undergoing restoration works. Service Inconsistent. Check-in staff was inattentive, and could not get the bedding option or room requests right even though we had only arrived after 7pm, and only came back again after dinner. There was no birthday greetings upon check-in despite there being a cake in the room. Turndown service was missed for my room, which was especially appalling after I had notified the front desk that the standing lamp was already unstable, and the lamp shade suddenly fell off and revealed how dusty it was. There was no replacement lamp that was needed as the overall room lighting was on the dimmer side. The aircon control in my grandma’s room was faulty and the poor lady had to sleep at 16 degrees for one whole night. There was no proper service recovery other than that the electrician would be available the next morning. The TV signal in my grandma’s was also poor and distorted, and I wondered if we were staying in a budget hotel. However, the service in Sarkies was commendable! The staff was friendly and thoughtful. Location Central and easy to get to most places by Grab in Georgetown. Sea view is a plus! But nothing else around but I guess that is an exchange for some exclusivity. Facilities The hotel was built in 2013 but the maintenance is poor. Refer to incidents above. The power point by the bedside would be inactivated once the master switch was off, which meant that I had to switch off all the other lights in order to keep the bedside power on. I have to sleep with a CPAP machine for my sleep related breathing disorder. The gym was spacious with a gorgeous sea view but had only 4 machines for weight training and a declined barbell press rack. The L shaped infinity pool was nice but the deck chair space was too crammed for comfort. There was a spa but I didn’t check it out. Restaurants We only had breakfast at Sarkies, which was on the ground floor. Food selection was good and the service was top notch, a far cry from the standards outside. Planters Lounge on the 6th floor looked nice but we did not have breakfast or any meals there. Overall, fell terribly short of expectations especially when it is such a famed establishment, UNESCO world heritage site notwithstanding.

Exceptional elegant hotel.

Bayan Lepas, Malaysia

Our holiday at the Eastern & Oriental was our first time to Penang and what a sensation holiday it was. We booked the E&O on recommendations from friends and wow we were not disappointed. Steeped in history and elegance, the hotel, staff and services excelled in every way. The accommodations are just beautiful. We stayed in a corner suite in the Victory Annexe and were just completely overwhelmed with the suite. It is the size of a large apartment with a north-east balcony wrapping around 2 sides of the suite, such a great aspect. The room was spectacular, so large, well appointed and highly maintained with excellent quality linens and amenities. The bathroom was the size of a small apartment, with a claw foot bath looking out over the water. Breakfast was provided each morning and offered a full range of western and eastern choices that were so delicious. The staff in the restaurant were so attentive. The horizon pool located on level 6 was wonderful. Food and beverages are available around the pool with service provided by the very attentive pool staff. Our stay was made all the more pleasant by the wonderful Liza (restaurant maître d) at breakfast who always greeted us with a huge smile and big welcome. Thank you Lisa, hope to see you next time.
