Lovely, scenic place but watch out for jellyfish

Melbourne

Overall, Pangkor Laut is an excellent resort which makes for a relaxing stay and the place is hard to leave. The resort is lovely and the room impeccably clean. Staff are almost always friendly and welcoming. Although food prices are high by Malaysian standards, the resident package makes it affordable. We paid for an upgrade to a beach chalet but it did not seem worth the money as there is a commonly used walking path and a large tree full of bats in between the chalet and the beach, obstructing the view and detracting from the ambience of the location. Emerald Bay is an amazing place to watch the sunset and shuttles are frequent and efficient. There are large trees which offer shade from the heat of the day and the beach is cool and pleasant throughout the day. The visiting wild hornbills at breakfast are quite an experience. The sea around Pangkor Laut with its exclusive beaches is beautiful but after an encounter with a jellyfish at the lovely Emerald Bay, we had second thoughts about swimming in the sea. After searching for studies on jellyfish in Pangkor and other Malaysian resorts at the northern end of the Straits of Malacca, it seems that toxic box jellyfish, including the irukandji variety, are present in the waters in the region but minimal efforts are made to prevent stings. This appears to be an issue not merely for the resort but, more broadly, in the area. We would have swum and snorkelled had there been stinger suits as are commonly available at the Great Barrier Reef but there were none. I later saw a huge jellyfish in shallow waters near Uncle Lims, although that was not a swimming area. It must have been over a foot in diameter. Apparently, Emerald Bay has jellyfish nets but the fact remains that highly toxic jellyfish are at times very small and nets would probably be ineffective in preventing such stings. The hotel land transfers are overpriced and a cheaper option is to take a taxi from Ipoh for half the price. We did not have a good experience with one of their land transfers - a taxi would have been more professional, and the hotel's response to complaints on the reckless driving and dismal service was somewhat insipid. Given the challenges of getting to Pangkor which has no direct flights, I would probably not return there. It is a nice place, but to us one visit was sufficient. Langkawi is far more accessible and beaches such as Datai Beach are, in my opinion, just as beautiful. Likewise, beaches in South Thailand are stunningly scenic and easier to get to. Further, we had more problems with mosquitoes around Pangkor Laut despite the mosquito sprays and vape mats.
