Vientiane

We love talking holidays and we're here to help. If you'd like our advice on how to create an amazing holiday, just give our Destination Specialists a call.

The capital of Laos, Vientiane is located roughly in the middle of the country, and very close to the Western border, making it easily accessible for visitors to neighbouring Thailand. Vientiane is also the largest city in Laos, and its economic centre, which makes it a great hub for exploring the rest of the country particularly the Mekong River, which it sits on the bank of.

Vientiane is known by locals as city of the moon or city of sandalwood (moon and sandalwood have identical pronunciation in modern Lao). Whatever you wish to call it Vientiane boasts a unique charm, owing to its colonial past, with French style architecture and cuisine amongst the noodles and seafood stalls.

While Vientiane may not be as well known as some of its neighbours in South East Asia, there is plenty to see here, Patuxai is Laos’ Arc de Triomphe replica, while the stunning Pha That Luang is a symbol of the predominantly Buddhist religious values in the country.
