Itinerary Breakdown

On arrival into Delhi you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Why not upgrade your first two nights to the luxurious Leela Palace Hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore this fascinating city at your own pace.

The following day drive past the Red Fort and through the modern city built on 17th century foundations and arrive at the Jama Masjid, the most elegant mosque in India which stands high on a hillock. On the way back from this elegant temple, the tour visits Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s shrine.Next visit New Delhi - Drive past the President’s House, the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the two flanking Secretariat buildings – the nerve centre of government activity. Driving down this hillock is the India Gate, the great memorial arch built to commemorate the slain heroes of World War-I and Indo-Afghan War. Around India Gate are palaces of some of the erstwhile Indian princely states that are now public offices and museums.Visit the precursor to the Taj Mahal, Humayun's Tomb built in 1565 AD features magnificent architecture and gardens. In the vicinity of Humayun’s Tomb is the grave of Delhi’s most revered Sufi Saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin.

In the morning after breakfast leave Delhi for Agra this is approx 5 hours drive. Upon arrival at hotel check in.

Next visit Agra Fort - behind its forbidding red sandstone battlements lies palaces that tell the story of the Moghul Empire. The most impressive part of the Fort is the Diwan-e-Am, where the Emperor sat on his throne to dispense to his subjects, and the Diwan-e-Khas where he received foreign dignitaries. At Sunset visit the world famous Taj Mahal built by Shah Jahan in 1560 in memory of his queen Mumtaz Mahal to enshrine her mortal remains. This architectural marvel took 17 years to complete. (please note: Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. A three hour time limit has been introduced at the Taj Mahal)

Overnight in Agra.

This morning, after breakfast leave for Jaipur (approx 5.5hrs). Travel via the deserted 'Ghost City' of Fatehpur Sikri, built in 1569 and the capital for 14 years. Scarcity of water and other factors led to the abandonment of this beautiful city. Visit the grand, remarkably well-preserved buildings and graceful palaces to relive the splendour of the Moghul empire at the height of its power. Continue to Jaipur and check in to your hotel.

The following day after breakfast depart for an excursion to Amber Fort, a classic, romantic Rajasthani Fort Palace. The rugged, time-ravaged walls of the Fort may not look beautiful from the outside, but the interior is a virtual paradise. Miniatures painted on the walls depict hunting and war scenes. Precious stones and mirrors are embedded into the plaster. Inside the Jag Mandir is the famed Sheesh Mahal - a room with all the four walls and ceiling completely embedded with glittering mirror pieces, which were specially imported from Belgium during that period. En route to Amber Fort, you will have a brief photography stop at Hawa Mahal - the Palace of Winds. In the afternoon take a sightseeing tour of Jaipur city visiting Maharaja's City Palace, the former Royal residence, part of it converted into a museum. A small portion is still used by the Royal family of Jaipur. Built in the style of a fortified campus, the palace covers almost one-seventh of the city. One of the major attractions in the museum is the Armoury Museum which houses an impressive array of weaponry-pistols, blunderbusses, flintlocks, swords, rifles and daggers. The royal families of Jaipur once used most of these weapons. Later visit the Jantar Mantar, which is the largest stone and marble crafted observatory in the world. Next, take a Rickshaw Ride in the local market to feel the pulse of Rajasthan.

Travel to Bijaynagar (approx. 3-4-hrs), a half way point between Jaipur and Udaipur. This quaint little town in Rajasthan's Ajmer district is a historic and cultural site. A Major point of attraction is the Bijaynagar Palace, located nearby. Bijaynagar is an ideal stopover conveniently located close to Sonkhila (The Great Indian Bustard reserve). A stroll on the camel’s back, a thrilling horse ride or a jeep safari in the reserve will be a memorable experience. Evening at leisure to enjoy the countryside.

After breakfast depart Bijaynagar and travel by road to Udaipur (approx. 3-4 hrs). Arguably Rajasthan's most romantic city, the 'Venice of the East' is lapped by lakes and backed by the Aravalli hills. The city is brimming with palaces, forts, temples, museums, gardens and monuments. On arrival check in to your hotel and the evening is at leisure.

After breakfast the following morning city tour of Udaipur City Palace, built in 1725, which houses the Dilkhush Mahald, the Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal and the Palace of Lord Krishna, all of which are ornately decorated buildings. After visit the Jagdish Temple, built in 1651 and dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver in the Hindu Trinity of Gods. Also stop at the Sahelion Ki Bari gardens and fountains and drive around the Fatehsagar Lake.Late afternoon enjoy a boat ride on Lake Pichola (subject to water levels). The lake is 4km long, 3km wide and surrounded by splendid hills, palaces, temples, bathing ghats and embankments. Visit the island palace Jag Niwas, which is beautifully set in the lake.

This morning transfer to Udaipur Airport for your flight to Kochi via Mumbai. Upon arrival in Kochi you will be met and transferred to your hotel. In the evening witness a Kathakali dance performance. Enjoy India's most spectacular dance drama based on stories from Ramayana and Mahabharata. The dancers are elaborately made up with paint and masks, accompanied by drummers and musicians.

Enjoy a morning sightseeing tour of Kochi and visit attractions such as the Dutch Palace and the Jewish Synagogue (both closed on Fridays and Saturdays), St. Francis Church and the Santa Cruz Basilica.While travelling along the coastline, at the Harbour's mouth, see the unique fishing nets which were introduced by Chinese traders in the 14th Century and are still in use today.

The tour ends in the Fort Kochi area where you can walk through the historic Dutch and Portuguese buildings. Some parts of the nearly 500-year-old fort are amazingly well preserved. The afternoon is available for your leisure. Opt to go shopping or visit to a local market.

After breakfast leave for Periyar (6hrs drive). At 1,000 metres above sea level, this is a rich spice growing area - 95% of the pepper in India is produced here! When Vasco de Gama landed at the Malabar Coast in 1498 AD, pepper was exported against the equal weight of gold, so pepper became known as black gold. Later visit a spice garden to see varieties such as cardamom, cinnamon, pepper, clove, vanilla, ginger, tea and coffee all growing in their natural environment. You may also visit the local spice market.

Enjoy a morning guided nature walk (3-4 hours) in Periyar wildlife sanctuary, an excellent opportunity to watch birds, butterflies and other wildlife. The trails often pass through evergreen and deciduous forests interspersed with marshy grasslands. The group will be accompanied by a trained tribal guide.

Later drive to Allepey, On arrival check in to your backwater resort. The lake, with its majestic canals, streams and tributaries along its banks, weave an intricate and enchantingly beautiful web.

Today take a houseboat cruise across the backwaters and enjoy lunch on board. The houseboat cruises through the intricate maze of backwaters, with its serene beauty and simple charm. Enjoy the Keralan countryside at its best - feast your eyes on an array of coconut trees and endless paddy fields. You will also get a chance to stroll through some villages and interact with the locals. After your cruise, return to your resort hotel.
