A truely great place for families

Nairobi, Kenya

I have just had my family visiting Kenya. This included five grandchildren. After doing a search along the Coast, my wife decided that Turtle Bay was the right place for us to stay on the beach. How right she was. Damian runs a team who make you feel welcome from the time you set foot in the place. We left feeling that the same sense of hospitality was still very much present. The extensive swimming pools allow for you to feel you have your own patch even when there are lots of others around. The poolside restaurant means that the inevetable need for snacks and drinks happens where you are....and when you want to get away from it all the Weaver Bird has a lovely ambience not to mention the birds, frogs and fish that kept the kids happily entertained. I enjoyed the Swahili motif peacock tails! Whilst nothing that could aspire to being gourmet, the food was always freshly cooked, well presented and plentiful. I am not sure how many chocolate coated waffles were consumed but they were definitely a hit. The rooms too were a welcome surprise for me. Large beds in an airy atmosphere with nets that you didn't have to fight with. Separate showers from the tubs were enjoyed by the team. Balconies overlooking the lush gardens made for a place to hang out when the sprogs had hit the sack. Water sport facilities looked great. Our lot were too young too take full advantage but will in the future, I am sure. The beach was suffering from a surfeit of seaweed but, as ever, the sea at Watamu was worth the effort. The danmage done by the dreadful wall built by Hemingways is a disgrace. NEMA should knock it down. All in all Turtle Bay was a great success.

Good location, average hotel

Sydney, Australia

We booked this hotel hoping for a stunning coast experience. They offer full board and unlimited house drinks; we found the food very average with minimal seafood in the buffet despite being right on the sea. You have to book into the a la carte section and pay separately if you want to seafood. The included drinks are low quality; the sodas/soft drinks go flat within a few minutes. Friends staying in the hotel saw a bartender pour fanta from a 'coke' bottle. The rooms are average, but well serviced. Rooms have a safe, but you need to leave a deposit in order to get a key for the safe. We did the snorkelling trip through the hotel and it was a mistake; we specifically asked if flippers and life vests were provided as my husband is a poor swimmer. When we got onto the boat, there were no flippers and the captain was unaware of our request. He pulled the boat up to the thickest part of the seaweed which was washing up on the beach and had us walk through it to hop on - other boats were getting passengers on board further down the beach where there was less seaweed. The captain was very unfriendly, bordering on rude, and departure was much later than we had been told by hotel staff. As a consequence, we reached the marine park as the tide was coming in, all the other boats were leaving, and it was too windy and rocky to snorkel for long. My husband could definitely not get in the water at all which was a waste of money. I spent 15 minutes in the water and then had to get out. Other hotel guests had used the local boys on the beach who were friendlier, cheaper and jumped into the water with clients to help them swim and point out the sea life. The hotel pool is probably the highlight. We took a drive and found that there are a number of stunning hotels up the road that are similarly priced with better facilities; we'll be going elsewhere next time we visit Watamu.
